Skyrim Legendary Edition is the best version of the best Elder Scrolls game, and compatible with a lot of legacy mods and older computers as far back as Windows XP. It isn't as bloated or demanding as the Special or Anniversary editions of Skryim, but is Skyrim as it was released.
This version of Skyrim really needs a DRM-free release for people who just want to play the og game without the special/anniversary edition crap. No in-game mod menu baked into the base game, no creation club, just the original Skyrim.

I have just purchased Skyrim SE from GOG but it will not run properly on my computer. I did have Skyrim LE from Steam which ran perfectly. I am still running Windows 8.1 and steam stopped support last year and so I lost all steam games. I have no intention to upgrade at this time.

While it may seem that the 2011 version of the game is obsolete in wake of SE version, the original Skyrim has one advantage that for me is rather important - it lets user disable DLCs, which allows for a playthrough that's more in line with how Skyrim was designed at launch. No more Dawnguard asking for you to join them in the middle of a dragon crisis, no more Miraak's cultists attacking you just as you get down from High Hrothgar. The DLCs were designed as continuation of Dragonborn's story and their merging into the base game in SE is rather immersion breaking. Let's preserve the true history of how Skyrim was at the very beginning.

Kind of baffling that the original game release is being "deprecated" by the "special/anniversary edition", given the importance and how popular this game is. Art cannot become obsolete, the original release can't be replaced by a newer port, specially when it makes artistic changes to the game (aesthetic losses compared to original product). This is a game preservation issue, we should have legal ways to access the original Skyrim as originally intended.
