If I can not find my final Witcher 2 game save, will Witcher 3 prompt me to answer a few questions to start off, or do I really need the save?

If you don't have a savegame you will get asked some questions. You don't need a savegame from Witcher 2 to play Witcher 3.
If you really want one you could ask here for savegame or search the internet for one.

You may find different saves at Nexus that can be down loaded.
