I'm playing with an Xbox One controller and I tried pressing the button combination for photo mode shown in the menu (both sticks) but nothing happens.

I'm just past the tutorial if that matters. Do I have to activate photo mode in a menu somehow? I didn't find anything.

I saw that in another thread, followed the instructions, and now my game keeps crashing when it's done loading. Verified files already, didn't help.

Worked fine for me. Are you sure that you pasted the complete secion at the end?
Edit: They also uploaded a hotfix - maybe this fixes photomode as well ... or at least your crashing when applying the fix.
