I have the qwent card "Villentretenmerth" in the game which says its supposed to destroy the other player most powerful close combat card if the total of them isn't more than 10. When I play it nothing happens. I've tried several times now. It still plays as a 7 strength card but no effect.

I'm afraid you've got that wrong. Villentretenmerth's scorch works when the opponent's combined melee strength is 10 or more. You said "isn't more than 10", which is the opposite of what is required.
