Been trying to get this to run all day today.
Re-installed several times, from DVD, from HDD...
At first, the launcher would display the splash screen, and then go back to the launcher itself. The End.
Now, after the latest re-install (and another), the activation doesn't work either anymore. Previously I'd see green ticks as you go through the various stages, now it zips past, and simply closes. The End.

Completely stuck. If anyone can help, I've to hear it!

Just a nice average system I have: Intel Core 2 Quad, Radeon 5870 HD, 4GB, Win 7 x64.

This sounds like an antivirus app has broken the installation by autoblocking scripts during it.

Activation means the game is installed so try a reboot shut of any AV and see how you get on.The exe to run the game if not on the desktop is in the folder named "bin" inside the location you chose to install it.

I was fortunate enough to be able to download, install activate and play without a hitch.Kaspersky asked for permission to set an accept or blck for the .exe of the updater. You may have your AV set to deny too much and games often wil fail or br broken by AV blocks if your not at your pc to alow the functions to take place,or that your AV sets all the choices for you.

If its not AV and repeated installs fail then the installer bin files are corrupt mostl likely
Activation won't be possible until the servers are back up.

Which is apparently now.
Yay!
If you've got a Radeon card, try selecting windowed mode. My ATI 5970 won't run full screen mode. After that, happy days.

From what I'm seeing, if you have a really high resolution desktop in general, either lower your desktop resolution to play the game full screen or else run it in windowed mode.
The difference a night makes.
Alright, so servers are back up (who ever knew they were down?), and activation and all is fine.
Lowered my resolution to 1920x1200 (I'm normally on 2560x1200) and now the game starts and plays fine. Had to disable Übersampling (what is it?) and only medium sized textures to get half way decent frame rates though.
Go to your virus chest and restore witcher2.exe from there. If possible add your game directory to exclusions, otherwise disable the antivirus.

Restart steam (of you have it on steam) and verify game cache.

You should be good to go.
I also managed to get mine working by switching to windowed mode and a lower resolution. My "native" resolution is 2560x1440 if that helps anybody with their troubleshooting.

Prior to switching to windowed mode the launcher would simply reappear again after a few seconds worth of splash screen + wait cursor.
Hi! I have a problem with activating my game. I have Disabled my antivirus and my firewal. Re-installed the game. And when it comes to activation, i type in my cd-key. And after that noting happens..
