I have tried to play the bonus videos available for downloads as extras for Witcher 2 gog.com version (particularly the launch trailers)
While I have no problem viewing the .mp4 files, I am wondering what codec is required to play the video of the .avi files.
I have tried Windows Media Player and WinAmp Pro on Windows 7 x64 SP1 and get sound only.

I'd just try VLC Media Player. That thing plays whatever you feed it.
I'm not sure about the used codec though - I don't have the GoG-version myself.
If you want codecs so you can use media player (or anything else the codecs will run on), I recommend getting shark007's codec pack.
I've come across files that makes VLC unstable, while with the codecs media player runs fine.
sorry, can't delete, please ignore

I am well aware of VLC player and its general versatility...
However I am trying to figure out the specifics in order to be able to stream the videos or play them on network enabled TV or gaming console(s).

According to GSpot, the video codec used is AVC1 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC)
VLC plays them fine...
Just wondering why would Windows Media Player have problems.
I would have thought they were encoded for the generic system without a use of specialized codec.
