Probably a minor but something I miss from the Witcher 1 is the pre-rendered intro. This gives the game a real cinematic feel and really sets the mood.

Hopefully we can see more stunning pre-rendered scenes in future releases.
Well, they teamed up with the guy who did the original witcher 1 intro again. You saw it with the xbox360 launch trailer. It sounded like they will have more in store for us.

There's not point to bother with a pre-rendered demo as the game engine is more than enough to do the job. I don't remember well how the pre-rendered intro in the first Witcher looked it, but I'd dare say the Red Engine is close to be able to render the same thing, in real time. The point of such games is to be played, not to sit endlessly to watch a video. If I'd wanted to do that, I'd watch some BluRay. And to put the final nail in the coffin, making such video costs money, money which has been far better spent developing the game engine and the game itself.

I must correct myself here. The Witcher 2 engine's endering is better than the pre-rendered intro of The Witcher 1.

Well I agree to a point, the Red Engine is fantastic but nothing yet beats a pre-rendered clip. Just look at World of Warcraft as well. It's not about having endless pre-rendered cut scenes, it's just about adding a nice touch to the game. Making it a bit more special. There's also more involved in a pre-render than simply pre-rendering it. They normally spend more time on animation etc as well to give it a more cinematic / realistic feel. You even said yourself it increases costs. And this is not due to rendering time. Render farms are cheap and fast.

There's more to games than just play. It's all about how the entire package presents itself that can create desire. Some people might not appreciate this but I can assure you there are loads that will.

PS the youtube clip above doesn't do itself justice even on 720p. It looks much better in game.

I honestly felt the W1 intro was too long. I loved the ending cinematic though!

But I don't think that kind of stuff is necessary here, what with the gorgeous visuals and all.
I didn't miss it, but the clip made me wonder if the remembrance sequences wouldn't have been better in a stylized pre-rendered clip rather than the animations currently in the game...
Totally miss the intro and ending fmv from TW1.
no prerendered video (intro and ending) were one of the greatest disappointments for me in this game.. i always feel like cgi sequences are kinda like finding bits of treasure.. like a bit of a bonus - welcome to our game, now let us show you something stunning to kick things off..... and then: youve gotten to the end, now heres a beautiful reward....

animated cinematics with the engine - while they may look perfectly fine - just dont have the same impact, because youre seeing animation in the engine every step of the way during the game... the cgi is something different, a break from the usual.. i was actually incredibly gutted and it was a real letdown when i heard cdp didnt want to bring them back for w2 :(

no, prerendered videos are no necessary... but oh man, are they SO ever appreciated when a developer takes the time to put just a couple in... like with the first game - just two.. didnt overdo it... was just perfect in the execution and really completed the package.

Yes I too missed the work of Platige Image (pre-rendered intro and outro) in TW2.
Oh well, it seems nothing is perfect...

hahah yes you are right, you got me!

Any pre rendered cg would look worse than what the engine can do. Those renders are compressed and when played at 1080p look terrible.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Nothing beats pre-rendered CG, period.

You must also remember TW1 is now quite a few years old. Have you seen any recent CG? World of Warcraft maybe? Looks like a blockbluster film, not realtime graphics.

Youtube is compressed quite a bit yes but in game CG looks stunning.
