i started playing NW1 but i got stuck at the character creation screen because i can't decide what kind of class i should pick, i always have this problem in rpgs but in this game there are too many choises.
all i really want is a class that could talk their way out of trouble and one that isn't terrible in combat.
so ye, what class would be recommended
also no mages because it's boring to play mages in oldschool rpgs

If you're against playing casters (both arcane and divine), then I'd recommend any melee class because ranged weapons are terrible. Right now I'm playing around with multiclassing as a Fighter/Rogue/Weapon Master for several reasons.

1. Fighters get more feats than other melee classes and they can take weapon specialization (and Weapon Master has several prerequisite feats).
2. Rogues have Persuade, Tumble and Use Magic Device as class skills (I save points on non-Rogue levels to invest in these skills if I have to).
3. Weapon Masters eventually get an increased crit multiplier and threat range for your weapon of choice (I'm using a Scythe but any 2h weapon is exceptional).

Also, I recommend soloing because you get 20% less XP from kills if you have a henchman (or 33% less if you have a henchman and a summon).

so for my first try you'd recommend fighters?
in my previous experiences rogue like characters are always weaker but they are able to persuade people easier

There are very few persuade/dialog options that will avoid combat, if any at all. It can be useful to get additional rewards for quests in some cases, but that's about it as far as I can remember.

That being said, try a Paladin. You get a melee class that has Persuade as a class skill and access to a little bit of magic that won't lead to tedium if you don't like casters.

My personal favorite is a Bard, but they can be really tough to play if you're not familiar with the mechanics of both the game and the class.
