Sorry if this is a repost, but I am running a lenovo y560 with an Ati radeon hd 5700, and when I click start to begin the game I get dropped back to the desktop. Any ideas?
Scratch that. Just realized that if I run the nwnMain instead of the launcher it works.

Yep had the same prob. Here are a few things you can do.

1: Delete the game and reinstall it any place BUT your programs folder.
2:: Then after you have the game installed go to this link and download the and install the nwn 1.69 update (I know the gog version says it's already up to date with the 1.69 but some files maybe missing, so it won't hurt to install the update from biowear just in case) http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch.html
3: After you have all that done. Go to where ever you installed the nwn game, look in that nwn game folder for this Application "nwmain"... click on it to open it (its best to open it as administrator) The game should run fine after that.
4: If you've already done steps 1 and 2 or your just lazy and don't want to do all that lol, you can just try step 3.

Tell me if it worked.

Some extra tips: You can also run the game in windowed mode if you like. Go into your nwn folder and find this Configuration Settings file "nwn" it will open up in note pad. Look for [Display Options] under [Display Options] look for the text line that says "FullScreen=1" change the "1" to a "0" so that now it will read "FullScreen=0" then right under that type this line in "AllowWindowedMode=1" then hit save (if you get a message saying you can't save because bleh bleh... all you have to do is drag the file out the nwn folder to you desktop. then repeat what was told to you and save it. Then put the file back in the nwn folder)

I maybe months late, but you're very welcome my friend lol.
Where can I get the patch? I followed that link, but it just takes me to the main Bioware page. I tried poking around, but I can't find it anywhere. Also, there is no longer a NWN page. Its just lumped together is their other legacy games without any links.

The "unofficial" NWN homepage has working links:

http://www.neverwinternights.info/players.htm

It is the one under "Critical Rebuild Patch" that you want...HotU version...

Thanks Superfly, I went to that site, and it had some information which helped me. I ended up not needing to patch anything. I just needed to set capatibiltiy to XP SP3. Should have done that first >.<
"Compatibility" you mean :-P
