NWN2 seems to be ridiculously unstable. Is there any patch that actually makes the game playable
without it destroying your memory?

I hardly ever need to restart my computer and never have memory problems but just a few short game sessions
with NWN2 and my computer has all its memory sucked up even after the game is shut down and I'm forced
to restart. Is this normal for this game?

I was using the extension posted on the bioware forums that fixes some issues with the game like the animation bug when your PC has been on for a long time. I don't think that could've contributed to the memory problem at all though.

My PC is not that old and easily meets the listed requirements for the game so that's not the issue.

Is there anything at all that can be done to make this game playable for those of us who don't enjoy restarting our computers every hour?

NWN2 is not unstable at all. If you are truly having to restart your computer every hour, then you almost certainly have a system issue, and it may be something like video driver memory leak, which is a common enough problem in many games, no just NWN. What graphics card do you have, and have you updated you drivers to the latest, or even reverted to prior drivers, which sometimes helps?

A quick Google search easily reveals that NWN2 is notorious for its poor optimization, bugs and memory leaks. I only wish I had thought to do a Google search before buying the game but I trusted GoG to not sell games with serious playability problems... guess I know better now. They did the same thing with Lords of Magic too, selling a badly patched version of it.

My video card is not the issue. I've played countless games both new and old for years without any problems like this. If this one game is having a problem with my video card, I would call that a bug with the game then and not a problem with my video card or its drivers.

In any case, I would like to keep this question on topic, I was asking if there were any patches, official or unofficial, that fix the memory leak bugs that NWN2 obviously has. If not, then I suppose I got stuck with a game I won't be able to play.

Does anyone know of any patches that might help?

Oh, you're one of 'those' people... Then get on with it.
Yeah, sadly every version of NWN2 is plagued with issues, it's not just a GOG-specific problem.

I'd be interested in trying that extension you have for the warping bug. I get that problem all the time, regardless of how long my PC has been on. Storm of Zehir is particularly annoying because my party keeps teleporting all over the Overland map.

RE your memory issues, how much memory do you have just out of interest? Also, if you bring up Windows Task Manager, how much memory does it tell you that NWN2 is using when running?
Yeah that "teleport" bug isn't exclusive to the gog version, I have NWN2 with MotB and SoZ retail version which I then manually patched and it does happen occasionally.

I find it ludicrous that they get stuck on placeables and stuff too, and then just run on the spot.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry, really.

Mostly I still enjoy NWN2 just as I do NWN, but I think the original has much more polish.

EDIT
For me, NWN2 uses about 100mb to get to title screen, then depends on module size how much it uses while playing. In larger battles it can increase to 600mb, though it might go higher (this in MotB's Okku battle, the one outside Mulsantir gates casting lots of spells with many buffs active and summons). My browser uses more mem... I have 8gb ram total.

I get 60 FPS with AA, AF and full shadows, so I put most things down to poor unoptimized coding.

Thanks for the replies. That's a shame then, I had watched part of an LP of the original campaign on YouTube and it does seem like a fun game, as far as storyline and mechanics go. But even the LPer had some trouble with warping from time to time, nothing as bad as the problems I was having though. Too bad the devs didn't decide to get someone in there that knew how to program a game.

http://forum.bioware.com/topic/124118-announcing-the-nwn2-client-extension-client-crash-fixes-enhancements-multiplayer-server-browser/ this is all I found for it and this extension did fix the running in place + warping animation bug. The character models moved around fine for me after I started using this... and I was able to play up to the point in the original campaign of going to the ruins outside of the village to look for the first silver shard, so I didn't get very far.

I don't know if the extension could've contributed to the memory leak... it runs with its own command window and stuff and does seem to slow down load times slightly.

The memory leak seemed to start becoming noticeable and getting worse after I had saved the game a few times in that lizardman swamp area outside West Harbor. After the third or fourth save it reached the point where it took like 4 or 5 minutes just for it to save the game and I knew something was wrong since game saves seemed to happen almost instantly before that.

During this memory leak, I believe NWN2 was using around 180k of memory. Can't remember for sure but I know it was something like that. Much more than anything else I had running at the time. It might've increased, I wasn't able to keep track of it that well since everything was lagging so bad and the PC was practically frozen. Even after I closed the game from the task manager, the memory was still being used and I was forced to restart.

I have 4GB of memory/ram total. MY PC is about 5 years old or so now, I guess. It had some relatively good specs when I bought it though so I feel like it's aged well and still handles most games without issues. Though, it could use more memory I guess.
