I'm interested in buying this game, but I've heard that the single-player campaign is hardly the game's strong point. That being said, I'm wondering how large and varied the multiplayer community for this game is.

Any answers or opinions would be nice.
I can't say much about the multiplayer community myself(I'm more of a single player guy), but from what I've heard its pretty great.

I would, however, like to personally recommend single player modules, some of them are real gems that are A LOT better than the default campaign(some even longer), and they are all a joy to play, there are some threads here with more info on them.

Basically, if you don't personally like the multiplayer community, you should still pick up the game for the single player modules alone.
I'll definitely look at some mods to see if it influences my decision on buying this game. Thanks for the help.

I bought the game only for the multiplayer world servers (or Persistent Worlds as they are called).

Guess you can say this was my first "MMO" like experience...only much better than all MMO's.
The community is small, but it's starting to get some new blood. There are some active campaigns going, but it's hard to find a slot sometimes.

A good place to look for open games is Neverwinter Connections, a Neverwinter Nights Multiplayer Matchmaking Site.
Also, if you're any interested in trying your skills in an RP server, feel free to follow the link:
http://www.amiaworld.net/

This and many servers like it are a living proof that the community is doing very fine. :)
As VeeTpl suggests, there's a good number of high quality RP servers out there, often with various additions to the game that weren't available in the original trio of Neverwinter Nights Diamond. You'll hear about something called the CEP (Community Expansion Pack) that added tons of new clothes, monsters, etc. Servers can also create their own classes and such using things called "hak packs".

I play on a server called The Way Inn (http://www.thewayinn.net), for example, where the maximum level is capped at 20, whereas Amia, unless I'm mistaken, is capped at 30. The Way Inn's world has been designed with, at least in my mind, a Baldur's Gate, Pen and Paper kind of feel, where leveling is slower and feels more important, and I've been there over a year and a half now.

If you go the RP route, it's important to find a setting that fits your goals and what you're looking for from an RP server, but believe me, there are several good servers out there.
Personally I've been having problems finding a server that I really like the last year.

Even the years before that I was scavenging for servers but found a couple one after the other.

I even hosted my own two times.

There ARE servers that are very well populated....the only con is that I never liked them :-P

...so I am kind of hiding out amongst the less populated and new servers....
