Do you need to be a rogue??

No. What do you like to play? That's pretty much the best character to be. Anything your character can't do can be handled by either one of the NPC henchmen or in many cases by potions/items.

I tend to be a rogue because I always worry i can't open a chest or lock that hold great items but i never knew you could hire people as I have never played this before. So might experiment then :) unless you can recommend a good character haha

All the official module are meant to be played with *any* class. You'll miss out on something pretty much no matter what, because there's something extra for almost all the classes.

Experiment away. But if you usually play rogues, might want to do that here as well. And maybe multiclass? Rogue/fighter is my particular favorite.
Rogue/Fighter is awesome and one of my favorites, but my all-time most favorite is a Bard/Fighter.

The D&D ruleset used in NWN allows for multiple approaches to situations like this. Rogue characters can naturally disarm traps and open locks on their own, other character classes can either hire a rogue companion to take care of locks and traps, dump skill points into cross-class skills so they can deal with locks and traps themselves, take a few levels of rogue or bard to get those skills for cheaper, forgo subtlety and just bash open anything that's locked, use Knock (if the character has arcane caster levels), or take a level of Bard or Rogue to dump some points in Use Magic Device then carry around a variety of spell scrolls and wands to deal with various situations.

Hopefully by now I've gotten across the idea that there is a lot of freedom within the ruleset, and the best way to approach it is to decide on what kind of character you want to play, then after you've decided that figure out how to build that type of character within the ruleset (rather than letting the ruleset dictate what kind of character you decide to play).
Personally, I like monks... At the moment I'm experimenting with a monk / red dragon disciple, which is working rather well...
Thanks guys! Think I'm going enjoy this game and if not I'm going go back to Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale ;)
