Doing NWN. Again. Last time I played this was over 10 years ago. Forgotten most of it.

Came across a spooky isolated village where a great killing of children had taken place. I accepted the Guardian`s invitation to find out who of two brothers were guilty. the last time I played this I chose the oldest brother who wanted to live longer as the guilty one.
But this time, I paid more attention and realised there was a THIRD party, a demon. After summoning it up, it gleefully admitted to the manipluation of the brothers and the murders.
In the end I found the brothers not guilty. Which was nice. I also decide to take the vial which allowed the brothers rest and the Guardian freedom- it also allowed the demon to go free.

End Spoiler...

I was really impressed by this story. It was a mixed bag of things. I thought I`d solved the crime 10 years ago- I hadn`t, but the game didn`t reveal that until I found out for myself in a 2nd run through. Even though I had found out the truth, the ending was bitter-sweet, the children were still dead, the brothers were still dead, so still sad.

Even when I decided to take the vial freeing everyone it ended up also freeing the demon, which throughout, showed no regret for its actions and even boasted of it.

But I was happy to have even one evil guy go free than one innocent man be punished. That is what justice is. perhaps one day the demon will get its true come uppance.

You really don`t get these kind of tough, realistic messages in games today...

Just wanted to say.

I loved this story too.

I've seen the demon bit, but I still hold the older brother responsible. The demon did what demons do: manipulate people into doing evil. The older brother didn't have to do what he did. I wish I could punish the demon too, but "killing" him in combat will have to suffice.

Wow, seems like at least three of the decisions are defensible.

The lich brother can be held guilty because he did it, and to hell with his rationalizations.

Freeing everyone? Like you say, there are too many innocents being punished.

On the other hand, you can leave the village locked in time in order to punish the demon! He blows a gasket if you do this!

I don't know about finding the cleric guilty, though. He's only guilty of being a fool and seems to be punishing himself already.

And in the end you are left with the same kind of dissatisfaction the families of victims go through after the sentence is read. Punishment only acknowledges the crime. It cannot bring anyone back! Very good writing!
And this is why the story is so good, there`s actually no perfect ending to it. The story forces you to make a tough decision where you`ll always feel a little disatisfied.

Yes the Lich brother was indeed at fault (which was why i was going to make him guilty), but he was tricked because he thought the kids would come straight back to life afterwards- He was still wrong even if that was true. The Demon, however was the one who manipulated these people. We all have bad thoughts at one time or another (don`t say you don`t) and the Demon took the bad thoughts and made them act on it.

It`s the action that counts, not the thought. The Demon also clearly admitted, even rejoiced in his wickedness, where everyone else including the Lich brother, showed remorse. He in the end, was the true criminal deserving of punishment.

However, if you leave the Demon imprisoned, everyone else is punished- is that fair? For others to suffer just to get at one?

It`s sad, because the Demon was not punished, but I believe, that if you do evil to others, eventuallly that evil will catch up to you, even if it takes a long time.

But I won`t punish the innocent.
So I did what I thought was right. I`d have felt worse to punish someone else who in fact was just a puppet.

But again there`s no perfect happy answer since the Demon got away with it... for now.

I think the Lich brother was lying. Check his journal; he despised the children.

The demon might have encouraged him in doing evil, but the demon didn't make him do it. As far as punishing the demon, yeah, there isn't a great way to really punish him, but I would take some consolation in the fact that by releasing everyone, you are releasing Lathander's keeper ]as well as the demon, so you are freeing a powerful force for good alongside freeing the demon.

A lot of people despise or don`t like children, that don`t mean they`re willing to murder them. I don`t go by what I `think` I go by the evidence. And all the evidence points to the demon. That said, the Lich brother takes some blame, but not enough for me to sign him as guilty, just greedy and selfish to the point he was easier to manipulate by evil.
oddly, a lot of people bash the Original Campaign as poorly done and not interesting...
The village of Charwood is still in my memory a decade after playing the game the first time. Not a lot of details but enough to remember the name
