Medieval 2 is probably the best all-rounder, but I like the epicness of Empire's map and Shogun 2 probably has my favorite combat.

tburger: AFAIK old TW titles (Shogun for sure) can't run on modern NVidia cards (over 6600?) Don't think it would pass QA tests ...althought I would LOVE to see TW here.

DraculaMarth: Did not know that. Pretty funny how high-end video cards can't run some old games, isn't it?
For cases like this I have a backup of AGP ATI 9600 Pro and PCI Voodoo 3 along my PCIE card :-D
Medieval 2. Loads of factions, from standard infantry and cavalry to flamethrowers and elephants with cannons on their heads, huge exppack. And isn't tied to Steam.

Anxiously waiting for Medieval 3.
How is Rome? I'll be new to the series and plan to start there. I own it already.
I am a huge fan of the setting in Empire and Napoleon
But for gameplay I can't decide between Rome and Medieval 2
they're all great. i like Fall of the Samurai because it's got a unique mix of traditional warfare and early modern technology.
I'd have to say that Empire is my favourite. Napoleon has many great things to be said about it. Give me Napoleon with Empire's map and we can call that an easy victory. But what they're doing with Rome 2 is blowing my mind.

It's very good in a lot of ways. The only problem is that it discourages expansionism via means of an absolutely insane 'distance to capital' factor that turns any territory too far from your capital into the most rabid, murderous bunch of anarchists the world has ever, or will ever see. But it's not a bad one to start will so long as you keep in mind that your focus is on conquering all of Rome.

Medieval 2 isn't so... restrained and takes the leash off. Which is why I prefer it.
Rome is the classic.

I haven't played the new ones much as though I bought Shogun 2 retail I still have to download 10gbs and my poor little internet can't take that, I mean seriously steam I haven't played the best total war since medieval 2 for months cause of your stupid drm.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it.
