Well... it's a bit odd to focus on only a single game.... but I'd say video game course/majors are just as valid as say.... film, or fine art courses/majors. And I'm not saying this to suggest that fine arts majors are garbage (questionably useful in the job market to be sure; but a noble course of study regardless IMO), just the reverse rather. The cultural significance of video games is staggering in this day and age...
And, if you have to single out a game for a course... you could do far worse than to choose starcraft.... don't forget that this decade-old game is a massively popular national sport in South Korea!
I'm not surprised. My cousin who is at USC goes to a few of those courses where you study games/game mechanics. It's one of the universities (USC, UCB, etc.) that teach game-related stuff.
Studying game design, or games as an art form is fine, but if you read the article, you'll find it's a class on how to better at the game. This isn't "Deconstructing StarCraft," or "Principles of Real Time Strategy: Unit Design and Balancing." It's "Zerg Rush 101."
