I don't know, i enjoyed X, Evochron and Freespace (X Been the most complex for me.) and some of those are stll going strong (X has another release this year.) Also, freespace and X Are moddable, while evochron has strong multiplayer.

Wasn't there another project a while ago called black prophecy? Was that released?
Someone needs to kick Ambrosia in the ass. Escape Velocity needs more content. Especially more that deals with Krypt.
Currently playing FS2 with FS2Open 3.6.12. It looks awesome, it feels awesome.

I also have the entire X series waiting to be played. I think it's safe to say that while Sol Exodus looks nice, I won't have time for it yet. Maybe I'll pick it up somewhere down the line.

The X series is brilliant... but you need alot of free time on your hands.

Make sure you grab the Blue Planet mod when you're done with FS2 main campaign. The first part, Age of Aquarius, is awesome. The second part, War in Heaven, is just... wow. Before playing it I thought that FS2 had spoiled me in terms of immersion and epicness, that I would never experience something as powerful as Capella, but War in Heaven is even more amazing on many aspects.
Looks like Sol Exodus has just been released on steam for $9.99

Now I think we've established its unlikely to be ne new freespace but at that price its worth a try. I'll buy it, give it a spin a let you guys know what I think.
I've played the first 4 missions and it's not too bad if you take some things into consideration.

This is very much an indie game, although a very good one. It is not the new wing commander or freespace and should not even be compared to them.

Gameplay
The control scheme is very arcade, especially using the mouse. It almost feels like a first person shooter in space (except without strafing). Despite this definite drawback, it does feature a number of interesting gameplay mechanics which make up for it.

They continue to introduce varying enemy types which require different strategies. Along with these there are an almost endless supply of cannon fodder fighters. The gameplay gets really interesting when they throw a large amount of enemies at you while you are attempting to hack the defenses of a frigate, defend fleeing friendly transports and ensure you don't forget about your carrier which is being bombarded all at the same time.

Story

It doesn't have mission briefings that are characteristic of all our other favourite space sims but rather tells the story in mission. The story is pretty good. By the fourth mission you really start to hate the bad guys and want to destroy them and everything they hold dear. Pretty good voice acting too.

Conclusion
It's only 9.99 for a pretty and fun space shooter. Not a genre defining game but it has an interesting setting and some well thought out missions. The first couple of missions are a bit drab but after that they just get better.

I reccomend you go and support these developers and I'm sure you won't regret your purchase.
