Hi, I just reinstalled SS2 on my laptop to try and play through it again. The game installed perfectly, then I added the SS2Tool, then the mod manager. But every time I click new game, the game crashes with an error message saying "System Shock 2 encountered an error and needs to close" or something like that. I can't find a bit of help on the internet. I've followed all the instructions, uninstalled and reinstalled, checked administrator, checked compatibility modes, checked the processor usage, and absolutely nothing changes. Can anyone help?

Have you tried playing the game without those extra attachments to it? It's possible one of them is messing with the game file or making it hard to read. You may also try running it on an older platform
A no-brainer, but are you running the correct executable?
You should run the one in the SS2 folder and not the one in the Tool's subfolder (this one is a backup).

Are you starting the game from within modmanager?

Did you install modmanager using an Administrator account?

**sounds like you're video is crashing. To diagnose, rename LGVID.AX as LGVID.AX.BAK and start the game. If the game works, it's your video. (though modmanager should be fixing your video problems if used correctly). Try and let us know results.

Thanks everyone, I think I got it. I made a few different changes taken from a few fix suggestions, and one of them just worked. It may have been the LGVID file change. The game will start now.
Do you recall which worked as I still have the game.
I couldn't find one single FAQ which had all the answers, but this seems to have worked:

Put the disk in the drive, but don't install it normally. Copy the SHOCK folder from the D drive into the C: drive. That should take several minutes. If it doesn't, something might have gone wrong. After it's done copying, install SS2Tool to the C:\SHOCK folder, then do the same with the mod manager. Then go into the C:\SHOCK folder, and change LGVID.AX to LGVID.AX.BAK. Then you run the game as administrator I think. You don't need compatibility modes. I always find it difficult to follow instructions dealing with files and folders, so I tried to write this out as clearly as I can.
....

use modmanager to run the game. The videos aren't working because the LGVID.AX isn't registered on your system. Modmanager will fix that.

Kolya's SS2 FAQ is all you need to follow...
Great thanks for the explanation.
