It was down for less than 5 minutes? Is that really that big of a deal?
Think of all the stuff you could do in that 5 minutes instead of posting this like:
-Go to the bathroom
-Watch a funny short film on youtube
-Make a sandwich
-Do a set of pushups, crunches and squats
-Check the mail
-Pay the bills
-Make sure your pet (if you have one) is still alive and has enough food/water to sustain another 12+ hours of ignoring them.
-Read A Modest Proposal
-Memorize the opening paragraph of one of your favorite books.
-Make a cup of coffee
-Polish your shoes
-Play a piece on the musical instrument of your choice.
-spy on the neighbors
-Take random pictures of yourself
-Make a utterly useless list of stuff you can do in five minutes

The list is now on my 'Approved Lists' list...inspite the lack of 'naughty' options.
'Play a piece on the musical instrument of your choice' does leave some room to maneuver, i guess, but still, something a bit more specific would've been nice...

Beta client had nothing to do with it, it was a Steam server outage that lasted for several hours, as was explained in the links Wec and lackoo1111 both provided. Honestly, there was no big deal, but there are a lot of people on the forums who do use Steam and might be interested to know when the servers go down.

You need to ask yourself that because as someone with such a hard-on against Steam you seem to patronize Valve products quite a bit. Honestly you act like an overgrown spoiled child on these forums.
