Hi,
I just bought Sacrifice and Giants:Citizen Kabuto. I noticed I need to have administrator privileges in order to install the games. Is there any particular reason why Power User privileges are not sufficient?
It's not a big deal; I can run the installers as admin, but the installers didn't seem to install any device drivers, system services etc, so I'm just curious why administrator privileges are mandatory.
kind regards,
Kwokkie

the installer will check to see if adobe acrobat is installed, and if not, install it. I don't know if that's entirely related, but to uneducated ears, it sounds like it.
The installers are designed to be generically compatible with Windows XP, not just Windows XP Pro. Since there is no Power User group in Windows XP Home that would have the necessary permissions to install anything, they are designed to be run by an Administrator only.

I dont have those games you have, but as I understand it, some games need to add some information in the windows registry in order to work, and to be able to edit the registry, you need admin privilegies. At least, AFAIK.
From Vista onwards the Power Users group no longer exists; anything that needs to write to a protected location (including Program Files) must manually ask for Administrator access even if run from an Administrator account. It could be that the GOG installers are designed with the new security model in mind; XP users are Administrators by default anyway, so hardly any users will run into this problem.
Well, i just tried installing a game i downloaded from my GOG account in a computer with XP which I dont have administrator privilegies on. I tried the free game Teenagent, which doesnt have a multiplayer component, so it shouldnt need to add a cdkey or something like that to the windows registry. When trying to install the .exe, it gives an error saying that I need to be logged as Administrator to install this program. So admin rights are needed to install the GOG game installers on XP as well. Just for your information! : )

this is true for UT2k4, which needs the cdkey to be in the registry (but it's done automatically, so don't worry).
Thanks for the answers everyone, my curiosity is satisfied. :-)
