Metaphorically.
By "blew up" I mean it "died a long and painful death where at first it stopped reading DVDs, then writing DVDs, then reading CDs and then writing CDs and now it just doesn't do anything apart from making strange noises whenever you put a DVD or CD in."

That sucks. Well, it still makes for a great paperweight. Or a musical instrument.

Because we've got one of those early special "Everything built into the monitor" PCs we can't take the drive out. Hence why it hasn't been replaced.
But oh well. I've got me own PC. The family can suffer DVDlessness
