Yep, you can get 1TB SSD disks now, in 3.5" format. That is, if you have just won the spanish lottery, or discovered your grandfather left you a sizable inheritance, alternatively a medieval scottish castle to sell.
I didn't see a price but I expect horror
What if I found this Nigerian prince that just happen to want to give me a tidy bit of money? Would that be enough?
The prince, that is, not his money.
Alledgedly they start around $400 for the 120GB version. Then quickly skyrocket to $1000 and above.
Engadget says $2200 for the 1TB model.
Really though, does a SSD REALLY change things that much? Do you get a significant performance boost? The answer is not really.
Applications that are heavy in HD swapping during loading do load substantially faster, but that's about it. There isn't really any mentionable performance increase after that.
For now, SSD remains an enthusiasts choice.

Rich, elitist enthusiasts.
read article recently...
they do make stuff faster. and considerably. saving/loading takes a second or two when it took 40 seconds on hdd, system startup is also quite fast (four-six times faster than hdd. depends on how many programs you have installed of course)
games besides saving and loading have periods of level/area loading. on ssd they should be practically instantaneous.
opening 1.2gb hd movie file takes a few seconds on my spinpoint f1 (one of the fastest hdd out there) on ssd it should be faster.
that's what i read as i personally didn't use ssd yet. but judging from trend and what hardware techs say ssd is going to be standard.
Really costly piece of crap, that works fast and dies even faster....
Oh great, more overpriced stopgap technologies. Who buys this shit?

This is just crazy. That is the rich elitists choice right there. I imagine it would be insanely fast though. The normal SSD have a read/write speed of about 220mb/s sustained this crazy thing is at about the 750mb/s mark.
How is this a stopgap? My understanding is this is the way we are going for storage solutions: lower power usage, no moving parts, faster performance, greater durability... the only thing stopping universal adoption of the tech is price. Its only a matter of time before that price begins to drop, just as with happened with IDE hard drives back when PCs didn't come with an internal drive and had most recently happened with SATA drives. As for who actually buys these early generation drives, you got me. I'm all for early adoption of tech in order to advance the acceptance of it, but not at over 2 grand a pop... that's just ridiculous.

Yes, exactly. SSDs are a stopgap between HDDs and cheaper, more reliable solid state solutions.
Ordered. Thanks for the heads up!
