It seems like some people believed NWN 2 was a disappointment in comparison to NWN 1. What are your feeling on the quality of NWN 2 vs. NWN 1? I want to know so I can decide which to buy when they are both available on GOG.

NWN2's expansion is honestly the best thing using the dungeons and dragons license since Plaenscape: Torment. That's all I can say since I didn't get that into NWN1.


NWN2's basic campaign is badly paced and has too much content.

lol i wish i could say. But i havnt been able to find any place to buy NWN2 digitally from recently. And from what i hear of the legal mess, it doesnt sound like gog is going to have it anytime soon.

I never finished NWN2. I've been meaning to try it out again at some point, but unfortunately all I have is the original CD version (not DVD), and it's like 10 freakin' CD's. Too much work =/ I probably won't play it again because of that until I can find a digital version.

NWN1 was my introduction into the world of D&D video games, so that game holds a special place in my gaming heart.

Gamersgate sells it, bundled with the first one.

Hmm, true. Insanely overpriced though imo. I already own two copies of NWN1 platinum (one from gog and one physical) as well as a physical copy of NWN2 plus the first expansion. 30 dollars is about 20 - 25 dollars more than I'm willing to pay simply for a digital version of a game I already own. Oh well, I'll have to wait for GoG to get it.

I can't speak for NWN 2 but I played through the campaign in NWN and it was alright, some parts less, some parts for the better. What annoyed me most was the fact you couldn't control your followers (I prefer full control myself, I don't like AIs on my team) and the amount of traps. I hate traps in RPGs.

The first expansion for NWN2 really was excellent. NWN1's second expansion was also quite good.

NWN2 is much better in regard to using your own party via single player. NWN's "henchman" system doesn't really compare.

I did spent a lot more time playing NWN1 modules. I won't say they're better, but by the time NWN2 started to catch up in any way in regard to user-made-anything, I was spending a lot of time playing NWN1 online on some PW or another.

I did hear that NWN2 eventually fixed most of its online issues, but it was too little, too late. The online community never took off in the same way as the original, which is proven by the fact that roughly twice as many people continue to play NWN online at any given time than are playing NWN2.

I actually just logged off a NWN persistent world after completing an event.

I prefer the first, but to be fair I haven't played all of NWN2. I finished the campaign but have never played its expansions. While with the first I completed the OC once but finished SoU and HotU multiple times, along with the premium modules and many of the user made modules from the vault. Really there are a lot of excellent user made modules for the first. Can't speak to any for the second as I didn't continue playing it long enough for any to be made. If NWN2 ever does make it to GOG ill have to give its expansions a try.

I like Neverwinter Nights 2 much more than I did the first game. Things are just better across the board, with the exception of mod creation which demands far more skill. In terms of gameplay, story, ruleset, and graphics, NWN2 is the better game.

I love both games. NWN1 is hands down the game I've spent the most time on by far. Between the official campaigns, community-made modules, and playing on servers, there's no other game that even comes close to it in terms of time spent playing.

Having said that, IMO, NWN2's official campaign is far better than NWN1. The MotB expansion for NWN2 is absolutely stellar, and beats out the second expansion of NWN1 (which is damned good on its own). I really enjoyed the second expansion for NWN2 as well, but I'm probably a minority on that.

Both games can be modded, and both have a ton of content and community made modules available for them (although NWN1 has a helluva lot more available).

But do yourself a favor and don't wait for NWN2 to show up here. Grab NWN1 and play it, or at least some of the modules available for it (things like Wyvern Crown of Cormyr, Darkness Over Daggerford, and some of the top rated modules from the neverwinter vault). You can't go wrong.

Once NWN2 shows up here (assuming it does), then grab it, play through it and the expansion(s), and grab some of the best modules for it from the vault as well. You seriously cannot go wrong with these games.

I find them both mind-numbingly boring overall.

Mask of the Betrayer is supposed to be good though. Still need to try that, but now I sold my boxed copy and it's not sold online anywhere for the right price.

I liked NWN2 more than NWN1 by a long shot. I just liked the story and the game play much better over all. I played a number of persistent worlds for NWN1, and was a builder/GM for a NWN2 PW; all in all, I think the PWs are basically the same experience, just with slightly different feels (although NWN1 does afford a larger selection).

If expansions are added in, I would have to give them equal marks. NWN1 has 3 (or was it 4?) expansions, and none of them really stick out in my memory (except I remember Hordes of the Underdark seemed to take forever to finish). NWN2 has the Mask of the Betrayer which everyone seems to love, but I wasn't really a fan of the way the devs forced that timer mechanic (being intentionally vague) on the player.
