I played Neverwinter Nights 1 before expansions were released and thus never played them. Now I would like to play its sequel, Neverwinter Nights 2.

The thing that I re-installed Windows ages ago and forgot to keep NWN saves. I don't want to play NWN again (there is a lot of filler) and I am not sure if Shadows of Undrentide or Hordes of the Underdark are meant to be played as a stand alone.

Does it continue where expansions of the original ended? Do I rob myself of some unique experience if I skip these expansions and jump straight into the sequel? Should I play SoU and HotU first? And please, be considerable of others and avoid spoilers.

I'm going to be away from PC for a majority of day but I'll participate in a discussion as much/soon as possible. Thanks for any reply in advance :).

no , the story is totaly different :

however : in NW2 , you can start with a new toon and import in Mask of the Betrayer.-> which more or less continues the story of the main campaign.

others expansions , are differents aswell.

be aware , the companions's skill sets / points invested are not so good (in the main campaign). If you want to craft be carefull :)

Glad to hear it :). And thanks for the tip! +1
The hero of Neverwinter Nights is not the same as the hero of SoU/HotU is not the same as the hero of NWN2, and like DyNaer already hinted at, all can be enjoyed independently of each other because they tell different stories. There might be some minor allusions to the previous stories in NWN2 - from what I've seen the player will meet again at least one NPC from NWN and one henchman from SoU/HotU, but the encounters are short and minor hommages without any real impact on the story, and your hero doesn't know these people anyway, so it should still make sense even if you meet them for the first time.

Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark are really rather good in their own right and I would recommend playing through them at some point anyway, but feel free to skip them for the time being.

NWN2 does refer to its prequel on a few occasions, but that's about as far as connections go.

Great. I remember ony Aribeth. It would be fine to meet her however I have heard she serves as a romance material, so I'm not sure she remains interesting.

Thanks everyone. I can be now at ease booting NWN2. I am going to be giving away a Steam key of Red Orchestra 2 today. If you are interested in playing, drop me PM and you will skip a line :).

You should play Hordes of the Underdark anyway, it's bloody awesome. :P

If you want to meet Aribeth again (although I can't see why anyone would), then you should play HotU. Keeveek is right on this, of all the official NWN content I found HotU to be the best and definitely worth playing - unlike the original campaign. :P
