Definitely. That's where the series shines, and I'm actually glad that COD4 did come up with some new ideas at the very least (sniper mission). There is, however, still a lot of room for improvement. I'm not excited for MW2 right now, but if it turns out to be something different, I may take another look at it
Well that trailer looked jolly interesting. I'm relatively knew to current generation console gaming, as I only got a 360 last month. I usually get involved when they're on the way out, like with my Gamecube, I got that when the 360 was released. Anyway I digress.
I literally know nothing about this game, or what the COD series play like as I've never been bothered to get involved. I've never been stoked by 'realistic' shooters, so I've just sort of steered clear. I suppose the way I think of it is, if I wanted to shoot people, I might as well use a real gun, so any virtual environment should have something cool with testicles to pump hot lead into.
Onto my questions though, does the COD series have some problem like I know Halo does with the type of people who play it? Does that spoil the multiplayer experience? Also what do you guys mean about spawning enemies, does that mean you can never 'clear' an area? Lastly, what was with that trailer, I didn't understand what was being said, does it have some continuing storyline or something?
Yes, the story continues after the events of COD 4, as shown in the intro clip of the trailer, which happened to be the end part of COD 4 (making many people who haven't actually finished COD 4 very mad indeed). You play as a new guy, and Soap McTavish (who you played as in the previous game) is like COD 4's Captain Price (the mentor) of the new game. You have a new enemy, and judging by the snow and the snowmobiles and the Russians, I think you're fighting in Sarah Palin's backyard (smirk). I hope the game will be as awesome script/story-wise, and it continues to feel scripted like a good Hollywood action film.
Gameplay-wise, Call of Duty 4 and up uses a lovely engine that calculates bullet speed/penetration, uses dynamic physics, etc. so as to make your life really miserable when you're taking cover. Basically, you can't hide behind that wooden table all day, as the table will eventually give in and you will be shot. The game uses super unrealistic health regeneration so you don't have to worry about stupid little health packs, adrenalin syringes, pills, etc. Oh, and the graphics aren't bad. It's very scalable, with videos of people playing COD 4 on a decent framerate on netbooks (I can link that if you want).
The people who play COD online usually don't give much thought to the story, they just want to jump online and trash talk, but it seems to only be prevalent on Xbox Live, with the stupid little kids who swear more than Christian Bale.
The spawn system isn't as bad as most people say, as what happens is that they just pop out of nowhere sometimes, and that's a fault that should/must be corrected in the new game.

it may be just a mindless shooter, but the amount of polish that goes into that series is pretty amazing. if you occasionally feel like playing a mindless shooter between your bouts of HOMM (like me) it's one of the best mindless shooters you can play.
Wow that trailer is completely different then what I expected. I'm actually a little disapointed with it, it looks like a over the top hollywood movie now. I know cod4 isn't the most realistic of shooters but it was at least a little more grounded in realism.
I recently finished CoD4: Modern Warfare (Single Player) -- yeah, it was pretty awesome.
Ain't did much with the Multiplayer, since I'm addicted to Demigod.
I am lookin' forward to Modern Warfare 2, sometime down the line.
Some people hear are being a bit irrational by saying CoD single player is pathetic. Saying they are scripted is NOT a negative. Infinity Ward imo are the masters of linear, scripted FPS games. Not all games have to be super open-ended to be legitmate. CoD 1 and 2 especially, were just fun mindless roller coaster rides done perfectly. The production values and polish are also top notch.
lowyhong, then what was up with your comparisons? Doom has no constantly respawning enemies (unless you count Nightmare mode, map30, or levels with Arch-Viles, none of which do it the same distinctive way as the CoD series), and you have no team-mates.
For the record, I love Doom, and enjoy the CoD series a lot, especially 4. CoD1-3 (and 5) all had variable, repetitive and overall meaningless campaigns, but 4 is one of the best I've played in any genre. It's a great showcase for brevity, variety and polish.

I like short games, they can be focused and concise, GTA 4 may be long as hell, but it is to its detriment since it feels like it is being stretched. It bothers me when people complain about a game being short, Portal is short as balls and it is still excellent.

Read my previous posts, my point was that COD's gameplay harkens back to older school gaming, with an added layer of varnish. Regarding your query on Doom, I did think of Archviles and Pain Elementals. I've also been playing Doom with the "Respawning monsters" and "More monsters" option on the newer ports, so that also contributes to the comparison
I didn't actually play the full length of COD4, only certain levels at a friend's place. We took turns playing and watching each other play. While I enjoyed COD4 more than other overrated FPS titles, I just can't help feeling that the game's more of the same. Like I said, the polish is there, but the game just doesn't surprise me much. It's a solid title, but I still think there are equally good or better games out there not given the same recognition that COD4 received
It's fine that you like COD4, and you're welcome to disagree, but let me just remind you that this is my opinion.
