I've seen plenty of movies based off of video games, and most of them are awful. But Max Payne has a sort of charm to it that I really like. I have no idea why I like it so much, though, because this movie has some major issues with it (There be spoilers ahead) :
1. There's this menacing-looking guy with a machete that happens to stand around on rooftops for half the movie, looking down on the world with an evil grin. Later, you find out he's some army guy who became "invincible" with the help of his little drug. Max goes after him in what you're assuming to be an epic battle. And what is the fight like? 30 seconds into it, Secret Villan #339 comes in and shoots the poor fellow. So much for "invincible", and so much for "climactic".
2. When the Valkryie (I think that's how you spell it) show up, they just aren't scary, creepy, or even interesting. They just look like generic winged demons that most people have probably seen before.
3. Ludacris. I don't need to go into details with this one.
4. It takes a long time for the action to even get started. The exact opposite of what the game was like. This part made me very angry.
There are some scenes in the movie which I thought were pretty cool, like the part where he's walking through the Homicide department, and when he's interrogating that guy that works for Aesir. In fact, most of the action scenes were awesomely done. There just wasn't enough of that, and too much of these plain scenes where nothing really happens. For all those critics who think there's too much shooting in movies, just remember, there's such thing as too little shooting as well.
Like I said before, though, I have some strange fascination with the movie. It's like every part of me is saying, "THIS MOVIE SUCKS!", but there's this one oddball part that's like, "Hey, this movie isn't so bad!"
...
I think I might need therapy.
As sad as it may seem I just wish they'd stuck with the plot from the game. It's like theyve ripped out most of the 'darkness' that made Max Payne so compelling to start with. It was meant to be film noir style.

For some reason I also enjoyed it a lot, I'd say it was fun. The same way Constantine was. And personally I thought that Ludacris was going to be horrendous, but I actually kind of liked him in the movie for some reason.
My friends all left and got rainchecks. I stayed and what do you know, 10 minutes later the action kicks up and I'm satisfied.

Yeah, the action takes a looong time to heat up.
I have a feeling this will be of the same caliber of the Hitman movie. A brief mildly entertaining popcorn blockbuster adaptation peppered with competent but sterile action sequences. From watching the trailers, it looks to be like a Sin City wannabe. Which actually wouldn't be so bad if Quentin Tarantino or Robert Roderiguez actually had some involvement in this movie.
