wodmarach: Oh it's in no way the best RPG out there but it's good at what it does. you could have just paused the 45 minutes don't kick in till you leave the training zone (complete with onscreen warning it's about to start) and pausing and talking to people don't count against the timer anyway you can spend a happy half hour in the first village just talking to everyone you can...

Runehamster: Oh, wow, thanks! I hadn't bothered going back to the demo - I thought it was over when you finished the tutorial :P

Now I have to go back and try it again! With any luck I'll have picked my class by the time the real game gets here ;D
No you get a really hefty chunk of map to explore with a good 10-20 missions spread around it.

Runehamster: Okay, guys - yes, merely playing the demo gives you freebies, but they DO unlock on an Origin account if you're playing on the PC. I'm on a PS3, so all that was automated (although I think I accidentally gave EA my PSN account info, yeesh).

I enjoyed what I got to play of the demo (had to go pick up supper). I got to the introduction of the magic system. I would say it is far less Fable: TLC / WOW / Elder Scrolls and far more Darksiders / Torchlight / Gothic. The art design is fantastic, the writing's decent enough so far, and the voice acting's quite good. Controls are a bit floaty for my taste on the PS3 - combat's fine, but archery's a bit of a mess (auto target, ehhh) and lacks any kind of 'punch' whatsover. Definitely "pew pew" instead of the nice meaty "Twang-thunk" I prefer from Skyrim. Stealth and magic are delicious, though.

I'm not canceling my preorder - definitely a first-day purchase for me - but I'm not expecting miracles, either. Solid storyline and gameplay with a Diablo-like lootgrinding aspect and I'll be happy. I don't think it's the messiah of RPG's I was hoping it would be either, though - it could definitely have used some refinement. For instance, the inventory - I haven't really investigated most of the UI, but from what I've seen Dungeon Hunters Alliance had a better UI, and that is not a complement.
I laughed when in the training area archery was a one shot kill with a charged shot. Then you get outside and they've healed the entire charged shot damage by the time they've run up to you. Yeesh!

Yeah you go through the starting area laughing at everything then you go outside and actually have to fight...

I have no plans to use bows as a rogue anyway. Have you SEEN the dagger stealth kill animations? Brutal and brilliantly animated. Even better than Skyrim.

To be fair, having better animations than Skyrim is no great feat (why hello there Dark Messiah).
In other news the ME3 demo which apparently brings games into Amalur... is being released after this releases (demo hits on the 14th) so you may well have out leveled whatever it is you get from ME3...
Looks pretty average, actually. Reminds me of the first Fable, which I ultimately found way too shallow to be good.

I'm not going to complain about the graphics, because it's simplicity made it run pretty well on high settings on my HD 6370 (had to disable post-processing due to black-screen bug, though).

I'll wait for reviews and player reactions. Specially, I want to know more about the story and lore, because I don't want to play through another Fable. DRM might still put me off, though.

I liked the combat, at least.

the game is a spin off from the original KOA IP, which will be a MMO.

the game was taking too long to develop, and Torchlight was a major success as a SP lead in to a MMO product, so they took what assets they had and developed KOA: reckoning.

it's actually a prequel to the MMO, so everything that happens in this game is probably just a play out of the back story that otherwise would have just been a text file or a narration in the MMO. game world wise it's probably going to be pretty big, with the MMO being even bigger, and the lore quite deep as they are aiming for WoW country.

KOA:R is probably not going to be the end all of RPGs in 2012, but I'm gonna guess that it's probably gonna be damned fun to play through and since the game (so far) has been silky smooth progress, it's gonna be the type of game you play through more than once.
Okay, played the demo OUTSIDE the tutorial for a while as a stealthy sort of chap with a penchant for brutal dagger killing sprees. It's very VERY good. Very MMO-like, but in a good way. Lots of nice little bits of lore already for those who like that sort of thing (like me!) with its own mythology and creatures that fit well. Also, this game is gorgeous. So refreshing to have a break from the realistic grays.

Yes I have and that's what I tried to do outside, I maybe got 2 stealth kills for every 25 normal kills, it's pretty hard, at least in the starting areas. Maybe later on with way higher skills it's better, dunno.

I liked the stealth kill animations too:)
Does anyone know a way to force a more weak-hardware-friendly resolution in the game?

I don't know but it must exist because it runs on XBox 360 and PS3 and those aren't exactly screaming compared to even budget PC hardware these days.

In comparison to my current hardware consoles are actually quite powerful.
I just don't understand why the lowest possible resolution is 1280 x 720.

Hmm, that's probably some of the smallest laptop screens right now. Can you edit the .ini file? It depends on the engine but you might be able to set it to your resolution manually.
