It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

We're happy to present a reasonably polished beta version of our latest Downloader. It's more robust than the current one and sports similar features, but the best thing about it is that it's made entirely in-house. We've got this guy who wrote it from the ground up, which means we can be a lot more flexible when it comes to fixing bugs and introducing new features (and we've got some cool ones lined up!).

Before we roll out the final release, we would like some of you guys and gals to try it out and let us know in case you encounter any problems.

Above problems are already fixed, will be pushed with the next release.

You can download the installer here:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.24.exe

On Windows XP and Vista, the installer will automatically download the .NET Framework, if you don't have it already. Once you launch the actual app, it's much like the current Downloader, so you should feel right at home.
We will keep rolling out new versions as we remove bugs and add stuff. You will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch the Downloader, or check for updated manually (under Settings).

Let us know if you like it, or if you encounter any issues we don't know about!

PMIK: I thought I'd put the downloader through its paces and download The Witcher 2.

I left it going overnight and when I woke up it had stopped and the following message under the progress bar "Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support!"

The download folder has 911mb and I can't see any way to continue my download. This has never happened with the old downloader so I assume its a bug?
Try removing and adding the game again back to the list, it should check what's already downloaded and resume.

predcon: {EDIT; 2 seconds later...}
And right out of the gate there's a problem. My browser stops downloading the setup executable at 2.6MB every time I've tried downloading it (three times; that's enough of a test for me), and every time the "predicted" file size was 3.4MB. I tried running the file anyway, and was told that the "setup files appear to be corrupted, download them again". The one time I retried downloading the file over the 'corrupted' file already in my default download folder (I forgot to put it in the Recycle Bin to prevent the retry from being appended with a '(1)'), it downloaded completely.
The timeout should not occur anymore. Did you use this link http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.12.exe ?

If so can you PM me your IP address and the time you have tried to download the installer? We'll look in our server log to track the issue.

Adzeth: Ah, yes. In my writing, I mixed the two (like I seemingly always do). I meant bytes, of course. The downloader says "MB/s" and "KB/s" (I guess that's Kilo :D). I've also figured out the exaggeration. The downloader starts with an exaggerated speed shown and slowly goes to the real value, but I downloaded a 17 MB game and it didn't have time to calm down. Now I'm downloading a larger one, and after some 20 MB it started showing values around "260.85 KB/s". At first it said the download speed was "1.7 MB/s", though (which likely didn't reflect reality).
Well you can start a speedtest.net and take a look how speed behaves. Often it starts at a larger value than you really should have. It's because that when you exceed the speed you're paying for, you ISP throttles the speed automatically. Therefore the speed stabilizes over time. The app is just counting bytes downloaded from the Web and updates the speed value every second.
Hey guys,

I've promised you an update today, but we're still doing some polishing and fixing so I guess this will happen tomorrow.

Sorry for the small delay :)

predcon: I downloaded it straight from the link in Firek's OP. I'm not sure if my IP address will do you much good, as it's used by a "Network Operations Center" which handles all the satellite modems assigned to it. In other words, a lot of other people have the same address. I also deleted the setup exec when I finished with it, so I can't look at the "Created on" date/time.

After adding Anachronox to my queue (around 2am, UTC -5), and came back to check on it at 7am, it had stopped with 10MB to go. I tried pausing and unpausing a few times, but it took having to exit the Downloader and restarting it to get it to complete the download. Once it did, it auto-launched the installer just fine.

For satellite users, this version of the Downloader seems to be a lot better.
Ok, I'll pass the info to our admin team. Thanks!

We've pushed an update to the downloader, please let us know if you encounter any problems. Have fun :)

PMIK: The in-built updater downloaded the new version fine. When it was trying to install it forgot to shut down the current version. It came up with an error that the file was in use. It installed properly once I manually shutdown the downloader. Maybe you should have the updater automatically quit before installing the update?
The updater should close the downloader before, did you use "Check for updates" button or it was automatic during startup?
avatar
PMIK: I used the check for updates button. Definitely didn't shut down itself.
Yes, this was fixed this morning, will push it with the next update :)
avatar
Barefoot_Monkey: I just ran the downloader and applied the update. It downloaded and restarted OK, then after a second said
GOG.com Downloader has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
avatar
Barefoot_Monkey: It's apparently a system.io.fileloadexception. It crashes every time I try to start it up.
Did you have any downloads on the list before applying the update? Try clearing the GOG.com folder in application data:

On Vista/7 it should be here: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\GOG.com
On Windows XP: C:\Documents & Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\GOG.com

This is on the to-do list.

keeveek: any changelogs?

my downloader updated just fine and works fine. I can see that avatar is downloaded properly.
I'll try to post the list of changes next time ;)

bazilisek: Just reporting that the updated version still has the same bug: if I choose to save to a root folder (D:\), the magnifying glass takes me to My Documents.
Ok, had to create a second partition to test that ;)
You're right, I fixed it, will be on next update.
Pushed another update, with the above mentioned bugs fixes. Thanks for the help ;)
avatar
gibbeynator: I just downloaded the update for the installer, and now it just crashes on me. It tells me that there's an error, but it won't tell me what it is, and just tells me to send my logfile to support.

Edit: After uninstalling, reinstalling, and not accepting the update, I get the exact same error when I try to just log in.
Please try clearing the contents of the GOG.com folder in AppData:
Vista/7: C:\Users\Fallen\AppData\Roaming\GOG.com
Windows XP: C:\Documents & Settings\USERNAME\Aplication Data\GOG.com

If you remove the bin files there, the app should start. This has been fixed in the latest update, so when you get it to run, next updates should be painless.

Let me know if that helps.
Thank you for the feedback, I'll try to reproduce the error.

TheJoe: The downloader is not checking to see if the .exe already exists in the target folder.

I already had Beneath a Steel Sky downloaded, but when I added it to the downloader, it just downloaded and overwrote it again.

The downloader really should check for the installer and check for updates before downloading.
This feature is planned.
