In short, 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed today at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut.

Too many futures have been destroyed by this tragedy. If you are able to, please help the surviving children and families receive the necessary therapy and support to prevent from having their futures robbed from them as well.

If you know of the best way to help, please speak up. This was the only thing I could find that pertained to this issue.

none that I know of. might take a bit of time for a (specific)charity thing to get set up. there'll probably be several of them tomorrow may have to wait til then. Not sure what goes into setting one up. Seems like there'll have to be one though.

I understand. One of my bigger worries is that in one week this will have faded from the front page and only people in that neighborhood will be the ones who even keep up with the news. Are there any non-profits or government agencies that specifically address childhood trauma from such events? I imagine after 9/11 or hurricanes Katrina and Sandy that the need for child therapy would have risen a lot. I understand that in other countries children are subjected to horrors more often but I am hoping that the US as a society can at least afford to soften the blow (what else is the point of having a big government?).

Leave the mentally ill, ill and keep funding them guns.

That's a very real problem. Unfortunately, the parents are probably going to be the ones dealing with most of the consequences for years to come. Children tend to be durable, but unfortunately, it's pretty unpredictable what the reactions will be in the long run.

I was shocked and saddened when i saw the news my hearts go out to the familys and friends at this time.

Please let us not change the topic. We aren't discussing the criminals, the laws, or the people we can no longer help. My desire for this thread was for us to put our minds together and see if we can find a way to help these surviving kids and families. This is such a big problem that there must be a system in place to address it.

I agree that children can recover more easily than adults, but they may need help to do so, otherwise they can also be more easily traumatized. Their innocence was taken very abruptly and very soon.
