From my opinion, Steam with steamcommunity.com is the best way to find someone to play with you. For people who like multiplayer, it's the best gaming platform. You can join groups, add players as friends, live tchat, organize events easily, etc...
I don't have any problems with Steamworks games, and I think Steam Cloud is a wonderful feature. The Steam "DRM" isn't a problem since they improve the offline mode (it's not so good than GOG, but it's better than the past). So, for singleplayer, Steam is one of the best way too.
The last problem come from third party editors, and their DRM like SecuRom, Tages or others "online permanently crap". But you have the same problem on other platforms except GOG.
For me, GOG and Steam are complementary. One is the best for multiplayer, the other is better in singleplayer with the global DRM free.
