Here, on Reddit!
I didn't make the post (as I am weclock on reddit too) but I know this much, I want this post to beat the crap out of those steam posts! :DD
Interesting how all the Steam fanboys in that thread accuse anyone saying anything positive about GOG of being paid by GOG to do so.

That might be nice! :o)

Sort of like how a lot of the GoG fanboys here tend to also claim that anyone who supports Steam (on the Steam forums no less) are also being paid by Steam? Well, either that or our fanboys claim that they are mentally ill or stupid.
Seriously, the digital distribution service wars are as bad as the console wars these days :p
I am looking for price and support. I am using Direct2Drive (not like it so much), Steam, Impulse, Gamersgate and GOG.com.

As with everything when there's an option, it might as well be a war between "Thing A" & "Thing B". Childish, moronic and exclusionary for no reason other than to give the participant an ersatz feeling of validation. Also fucking stupid because everyone with a brain knows that Thing C is the best!
i think it's stupid to argue about the two services. they aren't trying to provide the same thing.
however, if a game is sold by both steam and gog i don't see why you would choose steam.

Definitely. A more accurate comparison (for lack of a better word) would be GOG and D2D, because D2D does have DRM-free games.
Reddit and Steam fanboys? Separately, they disgust me, but they are together?
Sounds like a miserable combination.
People and their 'This service is better' bickering. Music to my ears. =)

Shit, that's SO true. I never understood why. At least the consoles are more direct competition: As someone on that Reddit article said, steam has a few oldies, but not nearly enough for there to be a real overlap between the markets. GoG consumers are looking for classics, not new stuff. The clue's in the name: Good Old Games.

Reddit really has gotten terrible nowadays. Metafilter is where it's at.

What if it is an MP-oriented game that runs equally well with both services? The steam overlay and whatnot can make playing with your friends a lot easier. There are alternatives, but I am sure we all know some people who only use Steam (and no XFire). I know you can apparently use the steam overlay with a retail (or other service) game, but I recall people saying they had problems way back when CoD:MW was still new.
What if it is a very large game? I generally find that Steam (when it isn't a holiday or free-weekend :p) is a lot faster than GoG as far as downloading goes. Not a massive issue, but if you tend to only get into certain games on impulse, it is worthwhile.
And then you have the achievements, that some people like.
I can't think of an example of all three (although, I think UT2k4 meets two out of three), but there ARE benefits to Steam over GoG. Of course, I am a sociopath so I don't really care about the extra nifty that comes from Steam's service for MP :p
I agree completely with AwkwardTurtle in that thread. Don't know if it's someone who posts here on a regular basis but it' is a gog customer

However, this assumes that the game will only be installed once. My understanding is that with Steam it isn't possible to easily create a stand-alone installation file, so when re-installing the game that means another download every time. While with GOG as long as one doesn't delete the installer there's never a need to download anything ever again, no matter how many times the game is re-installed.
