Why oh why does it have to be the infernal Facebook? The beast which I vanquished permanently by installing add-ons which block all Facebook activity.

:´(

Oh well, thanks for bringing this to our attention anyway. Perhaps I can get a friend of mine to take a look at the page.

amok: yeeessss.... because all the copies of the game are made without DRM, but a person sits there and attach it to every single copy they give away. It can get a little repetitive (it is copy-and-paste job, they tend to use wheat paste as it is very cost efficient). It is not well paid job, but it has a lot of perks (all the wheat paste you can eat, for example). They do this because they hate you.
Thanks, this cracked me up :)

But seriously, in most cases the developers do have a version of the game without DRM that they use internally. So it really shouldn't be that much work to rebuild the game with DRM disabled if you own the source code. Logically, it would make sense for this to be a first step (the game has already been pirated successfully for a while, let's remove DRM) before a giveaway (the game has stopped selling, let's give it away as a show of goodwill and to get people interested in sequels).

No Facebook, no joy lol. It's a shame that some 'freebee's require that you have a facebook page. Thanks for the offer anyways.

ecamber: ...
And how about infrastructure for distribution of the game? Download servers and all that? Using internal installers is not that simple, since they're not really very well tested (and a single stupid bug could turn this into a publicity nightmare,) so development of a proper way to install the software? How about agreements THQ most probably have with Valve about Steam exclusivity? It's not as simple as 'Oh hey, let's release it steamless!' That does work for some indie devs, but THQ is a big distributor and their ties to Steam are most probably much more complex.

Fesin: Haven't finished it yet, but it's a good game. Not as good as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. though, but I guess that depends on whether you prefer linear, cinematic or open-world sandbox-type games.
-----------------------------------
I also recommend that you disable things like Motion Blur in the .ini, otherwise the game is - in my opinion - almost unplayable. That was the first game that actually gave me nausea.

GameRager: I actually have a "condition" where it's easier(Mentally) for me to play through more linear/closed world games(More choices make me stress over what to do next[Or what to pick over other choices in the case of branching path games/choices.].), so I like Metro a bit better. That's not to say I don't like Stalker(Well beyond a few nitpicks like the way it runs slow/unoptimized if you turn everything to max...even on a decent Quad Core.)....I do.....just not as much as Metro.
Like I said, it depends on your taste. I just feel S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gives me more. This aewsome survival feeling of planning your expeditions, where you can only take as much stuff as you need, so you still have enough weight limit to carry home the loot. Where you can put stuff in stashes for emergencies. Metro 2033 is just a little bit too predictable for me - get as much ammo as possible and your good to go.

I don't get motion sickness/nausea from such things(Lucky me?), but I do dislike the jarring over-exaggerated blur most games with this effect have when it's turned on. I usually turn it off in most games as a result.
Like I said, I never had this problem before, even though I despise Motion Blur. But the effects used in Metro 2033 were so bad, that whenever you moved your mouse just an inch, everything would just look like somebody just threw up on your screen. It's not that bad when you mess a little bit with the .ini, but I wonder why they didn't make it possible to deactivate it in the Options Menu.

That isn't to say that Stalker doesn't have it's moments, or doesn't have aspects that it outshines Metro on. I just find it easier/more "fun" to play Metro, though I like various aspects of both.

I hate that stuff.......luckily games like Necrovision allow one to shut it off otherwise the screen looks like a film went out of focus all over the screen every time I turn the main character around.

Quite agree with you.

SirPrimalform: Does this version of the game require Steam? I have no idea whether this is a "Steam everywhere" game or not.
didn't try it myself but think i read somewhere somebody said that the installer basically just runs steam anyway?

Yeah, I found this out for myself after a while. In fact the somebody you're thinking of may be me.
