Ok, so this dude is nuts and chasing after a voice in his head and somehow convinced his two partners they were going after a serious threat.
But did all three of them really take on the 33rd (if they did I assume those soldiers were truly there to help with the sandstorm)?
The voice of the baddie he's chasing accuses him of only murdering 47 innocents which I assume to be the Muslims taking refuge in that city that they mortared with napalm. If they really did bring down the 33rd as well then he would be accountable for far more than just 47 deaths....
I saw both endings - One where he accepts that he's insane and gets rescued, the other where you continue with the madness making ironic sense of the last chapter's title "Welcome."
I assume there's a third were he commits suicide if you refuse to shoot the ghost image of dead leader he's talking to towards the end (but I didn't try it).
