Hello all.
I was wondering if any of you had experience using a game engine like UDK or unity and which would you say to use. I have no prior experience doing anything involved in designing a game so im looking for something basic where i can start to learn what goes into it.

I'd say Quake 3. Radiant is so easy to use, you just can't go wrong with it. Plus the engine is versatile enough to allow for plenty of improvements.
There's also plenty of documentation on the Net on how to work with it, so it's icing on the cake.
I don't know anything about game engines myself but this might help you: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/anyone_have_any_experience_with_game_engines_couple_of_questions
Edit: Wow, what's with the huge spaces between the words in this message? Is it just my browser?

It really depends on what you are looking for.
If you just want to make a game in five minutes, there are GameMaker style programs for pretty much all genres.
If you want an FPS, UDK is probably a good choice (that is what the engine was made for :p). Just be warned that mapping is hell until you get the hang of it (although, I hear UE3 added additive level design).
But honestly, with a bit of time, pretty much all the big-named engines are going to be equally easy to use.
As such, I would suggest Unity, unless you care about performance or have a very specific type of game in mind. It is pretty simple to use, allows for rapid prototyping (very important for maintaining interest), and has an insanely large supportbase.
From what reading I have done, Unity is your bard. It is going to let you do a lot of nifty stuff without too much effort. But it is a bard, so don't expect all the nuanaces of some of the other engines. And while you probably COULD tweak it and customize it to get your desired result, it then becomes a question of "So why didn't you just roll a sorc?"

Do you have any programming experience at all?
You could check out the jMonkey engine.
