hansschmucker: Seriously, it's really more or less US-only. The rest of the world has a bit of trouble because the stock market, trading in natural resources and currencies has gone a bit crazy (and of course that we can't really export anything to the US anymore), but there are no real homemade problems, just the effects of the American recession. Germans still have plenty of money in the bank, we just need a reason to spend it. For Europeans, the effect of this "global recession" is mostly psychological.

Well our government are dumping buckets of cash into the local economy in the hopes of stimulating it. The upside of it is that I, as a student, might be $950 better off sometime soon. Just think of the GOG games I could buy! I'm sure they'd have some educational value, I'm certain that the Oddworld games could be written off as a business education resource... Those Glukkons are savvy businessmen.

Ours are mostly pouring it into one company ("Hype Real Estate"). No idea why... they seem to think that this is a matter of national pride,,.

It's nice to see theres some justice left in the world :)
I hope that those who are affected can find jobs soon. No one should lose a job they worked hard to get and keep. Good luck.

I am pretty sure that the economy back at home in Spain was in the shitter when I went back this past summer. All construction was completely stopped, there were no big purchases being made (houses, cars, etc...), people were not going out so much, the cafes and such were empty, and when I talked to my friend that works at a bank she was telling me they were repossessing shit from people at least once a week, and by shit I mean properties. I don't know if things have gotten better now, but things were looking grim over the summer.

Nah if there was any justice, it'd be the useless middle management types who don't really DO anything that'd get the chop

Some more tallented/experienced people might still find job in the industry but I doubt other developers/publishers have too many opening available. On the upside we might see many new indie devs pop up in coming years...
yeah, I am kind of sad, because it's probably only going to cling to drm and reusable ip up until death.
While they should be opening up any sort of back catalogue to GOG. :)
EDIT:
queue the parade, start the confetti, two effin' stars.

Is anyone else chilled to the bone that they start losing money right after they start actually making some changes people have been clamering for?
Finally new IPs alongside tired old ones (Dead Space)
New, risky ideas in an IP instead of tired old ones (Mirror's Edge)
No DRM (Prince of Persia was released with no DRM, iirc)
I hope they don't get scared off by these earnings numbers and delay their shift to a more well-rounded lineup.
EDIT: Sorry, just remembered PoP is Ubi, not EA. Other points still stand.

Are you talking about EA or Activision? Activision's already made that move.

It's sad, it seems their new focus on quality instead of quantity is not paying off. So soon they'll probably be back in Activision-mode and focus on mass market bullcrap.

We still have this big announcement thing to come, you never know it MIGHT be EA. Then again it might also be a coupon for a free home delivery of a scantily clad and 'totally on for it' kylie minogue, the odds are probably about the same...
Also: Damn you and your 2 stars! I'll catch you yet!
....::..::..:::.
Thats the best I can manage on the confetti front, you'll have to imagine it falling into a pile of that shape

I don't consider it a competition, I hope that you too get yourself some stars, it took me a long time, and I kept wondering "how long until my next star?" but it turned out alright.

Well no, it's not a real competition, it's pointless and stupid to compete over something so irrelevant but that's no reason for me not to try and win!
It's times like these when you feel good that Dilbert exists, making fun of officce life andlayoffs in general.
