For example, when new versions of DOSBox are released, do they ever go back and patch all the DOS games? I would assume they obviously have at one point or another, but I've never seen any news item detailing game changes. Can anyone confirm any games that were updated post-release? Thanks.

They probably would upgrade to a new version of DOSBOX if there was a significant change that was relevant to the specific game... after all, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
To my knowledge GoG hasn't updated any of the DOS games with a new version of DOSbox. My guess is, if the game was working fine on the old version, no point in having to update it. However, I recall GoG once updating some other games if they realized there was some sort of issue with it. If a new version of DOSbox comes out and really helps a game or fixes it in some way, I'm sure we'd see an update.

Gah! You beat me to it! And we said almost the same things... o.O

they'd just update the executable.
no patches, you'd have to download and reinstall

On the other hand, if it's just a DOSBox update, you could just install the new version of DOSBox, and then copy the dosbox.exe to the game folders.
So far they've released loader to Postal which fixed problems with turning left.
Septerra Core installer was updated as it was missing manual and readme and Warlords Battlecry 3 installer was updated with unofficial patch so they sometimes do update their installers. You have to reinstall to make use of the changes however.
Some people have mentioned better performance for some GOG games on Dosbox 0.73 so GOG probably should update the DOS game installers. Also when Windows 7 is officially launched they will probably have to update all of their installers to take it into account.
One thing about updating DOSBox 0.72 to 0.73, when I did it, it wasn't enough to just replace the dosbox.exe, I also had to replace SDL.dll and SDL_net.dll.
Yeah. I think they should too. For example, the mouse bug (where the mouse cursor would be stuck on the left side of the screen) in Stonekeep has been fixed. I know it's easy to do it yourselves, but not every buyer is THAT tech savvy.

Certainly I'd be happy to see them make necessary improvements to games they've already released (God knows Steam is suffering from a major lack of that sort of attention, especially with their "classic" titles), but when they do I would hope they'd put out a news or sticky forum post so we know to re-download our games. I assume I'm like most people in that I generally download my GOG games once when I buy them, then archive them for easy access in the future.

Posting about it is not quite enough as most user do not visit the site as frequently as some of us so they will easily miss news updates and forum posts about file updates. This if why I made a feature request for upload/update date next to each file so users can easily see when it was last updated.

That'd be even better. In fact, maybe when the Setup exe goes through its "Checking file integrity" procedure, it could automatically query the GOG server to make sure you've got the most recent version of the game.

+1 on that. I would really appreciate that feature.

If you haven't already done so, it's not a bad idea to make this suggestion on the GOG.com Features Wishlist. The ironic thing about that request is that if it would happen, every installer would be updated in order to support that. :P

Yeah. I submitted it shortly after replying. I hope something like that would be fairly easy to implement for them.
