How will this affect DLC downloads? I still haven't played the last two pieces for Fallout 3, and would like to some day.
It seems Bioshock 2 and both Batman: Arkham games have been setting up Steam Achievements and may be removing other connections to GFWL just in case it does cut out for good.

I was never bothered by it as I always just used my offline account so it wouldn't try to access stuff on the net and I don't think I ever had an issue with it (possibly with GTA 4 but I remember Social Club was way worse) but it was a useless feature anyway, I'm glad it's gone.
No, the witch still lives. GFWL will still exist.
Bumping this after seeing this info.

It looks like the GFWL service might have an official end date of July 1st 2014.

wpegg: In some ways this is bad news, as it could represent the first step in the oft feared DRM situation where they do end up switching off, or incompatibly upgrading their DRM servers such that existing titles can no longer validate with it. Costing users by locking out a load of peoples games (such as Arkham Asylum).

I'd love for that to happen.

If the servers are completely shut down, nope unless an alternative like steamworks is added. Same for any game that needs online activation through GFWL. If they can't be activated with an offline profile and the servers are shut down, those games won't be playable. You'll have to crack/pirate them.
Shame. I loved 2 things about GFWL: 1 - It never IP blocked access to games, unlike Steam. 2 - It had its points sold in Japan (although the store only sold DLC).

And I guess this means no Dark Souls 2 for Japan on PC then as Dark Souls 1 had Steam removed from it for the JPN release.
