Lenny: Come to think of it, pretty sure they were first with dedicated customizable servers too.
It's kinda ironic that today developers are excluding these features that defined multiplayer pc-gaming.

Don't forget shareware/demos. They were major proponents of shareware in the games industry. There's no denying the advantage of being able to try a game before you buy it.
It's about time, definitely deserved.

Did id do that first? I thought maybe 3D Realms did.
Grats to him. :)

Yes, Apogee started the whole shareware business in the late 80s

Like CoD MW2 (no dedicated servers) and C&C4 (No LAN).

Exactly. Publishers now believe they were just giving away too much to the people. They should pay up from now on.

Yeah, I think you're right, actually. 3D Realms did that first.
I never liked shareware but I like Carmacks work. Can't say I'm drooling over the news but he got what he deserved to say the least. Also Doom 3 still looks great nowadays, QuakeWars would've been great but the games Carmack works on are too much 'arcade' with the strafing and hopping for me. If he were to work on a project along the vein of Universal Combat...........

Cryxo: Remind me what kind of revelations and revolutionary things he introduced to pc gaming.
Can't be bothered to remember.

Lenny: -First Person Shooters, first 2,5D then 3D.
-Lan Play, first over IPX then TCP/IP
-Internet Play, TCP/IP matchmaking etc.
-User Modification support.
-All id tech engines are eventually released as open source for people to learn on or build there own projects.
-id always supported OpenGL helping diversity, competetion and making non MS systems viable for gaming.

Oh, and OpenGL is fucking awesome anyway compared to DirectCrappyX :-P
So, this is the guy that was driving in his Ferrari spending the money he had earned with Doom?

You're thinking of the other John, Romero... you know, the guy with Daikatana? ;)
Carmack actually invested most of his money back in id.
He also launches rockets.

Oh :-D
It's about time. He definitely deserves it - he is a programming genius - just see a prove below if you have any doubts:

The platform it is running on is one thing, the fact that he wrote a huge majority of it ( as well as other id engines until Rage) all by himself is another.

Actually, I think Carmack gave his Ferrari away as part of a contest once. Wasn't that at a QuakeCon?
Yes, yes he did, at the first QuakeCon; it was the prize given to the winner of the deathmatch (don't remember right now who won though).
In the general scheme of things though, Romero is the one that pissed most of the money off (hence the Ferrari joke I sort-of-made) and not Carmack.
Also, they both had Ferraris :D
This guy absolutely deserves it. Congrats, Carmack!
I really hope that Rage do good, and that Doom 4 blows everyone away (PC FTW). ;)
