cogadh: I used to think that Angel was great and Buffy was the greatest, but now that I am in the middle of re-watching the old episodes online, I gotta agree with Weclock, neither one is any great shakes. Angel has aged slightly better as a show, but both are simply boring teen angst-fests. Now if you want to talk about a real show from Whedon, let's talk Firefly...
BTW - Its interesting how all these newbies failed to see the subtle profundity of Weclock's post and instead of reading it, they dismiss it as simple trolling. There is nothing simple about Wec's trolling and it would be wise to realize that now before he gets out his gas mask.

If we want to talk about profundity, Buffy is one of the most profound series to have aired. Watch a random episode like Earshot or Out of Mind Out of Sight and that is profound. Take each episode at face value and you might be "meh". If you have any appreciation of classic literature, folk tales and the human condition, you might think different.
@ drmlessgames: Great argument. You've convinced me.
What shows do you think the Josh Wheaton influence has rubbed off on?
Edit: Saying 24 was influenced by Whedon is one of the most hilarious things I've ever read. 24 was great for 3 seasons but then ran itself into the ground with poor writing, plot and character. But even I wouldn't argue 24 was great because it was influenced by Buffy in its first 3 seasons.

DevinH: I've got to completely disagree. TV would be much worse today if it wasn't for Whedon's influence. Because of him, we got great TV shows such as Dead Like Me and the new Doctor Who. It would be nice if more shows learned something from him so we wouldn't have as much shit on like 24.

drmlessgames: I disagree with that. 24 exists solely because of joss whedon. incredible that you haven't seen they're basically written by the same crappy whedon influenced team. I dont know what people see on this guy's shows, but anything whedon just gives me allergies. Maybe its fans are sadistic, i dont know.

If you can't see the difference between 24 and anything that Whedon has written, you might be brain dead. The writing teams have very minimal overlap, and the styles are completely different.

both wheton shows only had crappy garden variety "life reflexions" suited for primetime drama. They weren't deep, well, probably compared to what else is around while channel zapping, but that doesnt make it "deep".

Sure, if you look at individual episodes, like the ever-popular Hush or Once More With Feeling, there is some very impressive television there, but the shows lasted for 5 and 7 seasons each. There are a lot more of those "meh" episodes than there are profound ones. Each series taken as a whole do not hold up all that well. At the time they originally aired, they were new and unique and as such they are afforded some base "cred", but in retrospect, they really don't have much more than that. I'm not saying the shows were bad and I do still enjoy watching the occasional episode, but they really were fluff television and unabashedly so.
Ugh, neither. That god damned gay green devil bastard drives me nuts.
I enjoyed both but lost interest in Buffy after the 5th season 6 was quite a struggle at times and Angel got so messed around in the schedules here i've only seen up to the end of the 3rd season for all i know he's still stuck a the bottom of the sea.
I will one of these days get around to finish them both off.

That character archetype has been around since Quincy M.E.
His bar-owner/restauranter friend...how about the Star Trek : DS9 character based on that archetype in the 90s? Alright, he was a hologram, and only lasted one season (maybe a little longer)...So Whedon put a demonesque slant on it...whup-de-doo...
Buffy was alright at the time, in places. Angel, I never got into. Firefly was pure awesone : right up until Fox started messing with it : filming and airing (hardly their first crime of this nature, though, is it?). Serenity was a good, if rushed, ending (again, because of Fox), and the plans to start another series of it (or season if you're a Yank) got shelved some time ago :(
I liked both, but the darkness and depth of Angel edged out Buffy IMO.
Speaking of Joss Whedon shows, he also wrote a few episodes of Rosanne. ;-)

I like Mirror's Edge, too. A lot better than I like Dollhouse.
Who would have thought that Wash would've made a good *spoilers for Dollhouse* villian? Damn, he was so creepy and evil! Especially at the very end of S1 when he's talking to himself while trying to wipe Echo. I haven't watched any of S2 because I work when it airs. I'm waiting for the DVD release (like I do with all of my shows, Lost, Heroes, Castle, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and a few others)
P.S. If you're a fan of Joss Whedon's you should look into another show called Veronica Mars. He liked that show so much that he did a guest appearance. You have to look past the initial impression that it gives to realize how amazing it is (it took my wife like 6 months to convince me to watch it, but the end of S2 convinced me that it is INCREDIBLE!)
Wash also turned up int eh "new" remake of "V"...as one of the "V"isitors...got killed part way through episode one, revived in episode 2, and for killed again for real in episode 3....still waiting for the Freddy Krueger character to show his face. So far the Mike Donovan newsman remake is like a limp-wristed, full on gay-mode version.
Inara's excellent, but is it just me or has she lost toooooooo much weight for this alien leader character? She used to be hot and curvy....

I don't understand. Are you saying that 24 does or doesn't seem like it was influenced by (or written by the same team as) Joss' shows? If so, then NO!! No way!!
