Lol it wont work Only fools and horses is a classic. Remakes and revamps come and go
I don't know much about this British TV series so please forgive me if I don't know better but John Leguizamo is a good actor. I think he makes a really good con artist too(watch the movie, The Pest). He was also really good in the movie, Spawn.

I think I'd prefer to see the original, any chance of pbs or bbc america picking it up the original?
(doubt it on bbc america, they seem to only show cooking shows and Top Gear)

The problem is that Derek Trotter wasn't a con artist, he was, as we would put it "a wheeler dealer". So he needs to be a bit shifty, a bit streetwise, but also a bit niave. I think that the american ideal of perfect characters will lose the subtle (and not so subtle) flaws that he had.
I cant decide if this is sarcastic or not:

"But while the US remake of the show is no doubt highly-anticipated by fans of Only Fools And Horses, Jason said recently that he doesn't know whether or not the concept will work."

It doesn't matter about the actor, as wpegg said about your post, it'll lose the British humour which is why it's a classic, and he's not a con artist he's a "wheeler dealer" selling dodgy/hooky goods.

Terrible news.
Do we even need to mention "Red Dwarf"?

What I think that'd be better would be Only Fools and Horses in modern day, with Del boy similar to Grandad, Rodney similar to Uncle Albert and Del and Rodney's children (forget their names) similar to Del and Rodney. Just throwing out that idea cause David Jason isn't a young man anymore and they're not continuing Rock 'n' Chips.
If you want to do a show exploring the same themes or with similar characters that would be marginally better, but labeling this as a remake of a series that was so well established and so very British in it's humour is likely to crush it on the spot. Cheeky-chappy lovable rogueishness is practically sewn in.

The best American remakes in both comedy and drama that I have seen have tended to take the edge off darker British versions and make them more accessible - OFAH was never a particularly dark show to begin with (though it did have a few big downer moments, which created a great sense of catharsis in the humour that followed), and was already very everyman.
What a bunch of plonkers.
