But my favorite film so far has been Chicken With Plums, about, in essence, a musician's lifelong romance with his violin and the ecstasy and heartbreak it begets him. It's gorgeous and melancholy, but told with a brisk manic pace that never gets bogged down. Echoes of the best narrative lyricism of Jean-Pierre Jeunet (especially after his disappointing "MicMacs").

I wanted to love David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" but couldn't. Watching Robert Patterson glower nonchalantly over an icy color palate for two hours was not a transcendent experience. Though Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti did their best to inject life into the generally bloodless Mise-en-scène.
Personally so far I've really enjoyed Searching for Sugar Man (a fantastic documentary about the fate of a cult singer-songwriter called Rodrigrez), Looper (makes no sense but is a lot of fun), Ruby Sparks (I thought it was really funny and cute) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (a fantastic slow paced thriller with mesmerizing cinematography). The film I liked the least this year would be The Avengers (found it boring, unfunny and far too long).

TheJoe: All your posts are really interesting, Barry. It's like you only communicate in lists, it's a very efficient means of communication I must say.
Lol, imagine Barry on a date.

"My favorites things about you:

Honorable mentions:

Yours?"

(I was going to fill in the list but it seemed too crude :))
I've got to add Skyfall to the list of films I enjoyed this year. I didn't expect that kind of tone for a Bond film, but maybe because of that I liked it more than many of the other Bond films.
Figured I should bump this since the year is almost over. I think my list is done for the year other than the foreign films that I probably won't see this year like Berberian Sound Studio and Like Someone in Love:

16. The Grey
15. Seven Psychopaths
14. The Raid
13. Tabu
12. Compliance
11. Bernie
10. Antiviral
9. The Comedy
8. Samsara
7. Killer Joe
6. Moonrise Kingdom
5. Cosmopolis
4. Dredd
3. Amour
2. Killing Them Softly
1. The Master

Best picture of the year was "Avengers XXX" starring Chyna as 'She-Hulk'.

Wait...maybe I'm in the wrong forum.
For me it was Amour without any doubt. Haven't seen a movie in a while that created such great emotions while watching it. Also the acting of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emanuelle Riva was outstanding and among the best I ever saw.
