I've actually never had to use one of these before, but for some reason some relatives decided to give one to me for Christmas, and so far it has been causing me nothing but headaches. Note, this is a Walmart VISA gift card, not a regular gift card, so its supposed to be useable anywhere, retail and on-line. Apparently not?
I first tried using it with Steam to make a purchase of $49.99. The gift card was $50 so logically, it should work right? I haven't used it at all so the full amount is on it...wrong, Steam wants to charge me $1.00 for verification and now it says I didn't have enough on it. Still waiting to get that $1.00 back on my card...
So I decide to head over to GOG and pick up the Disciples during the promo, I figure, okay, this is only $15 so it SHOULD work. Wrong again. GOG isn't authorizing my card for some reason - its not letting me buy anything with it. The card is registered with the walmart gift site, and according to the site I should be able to use it at online vendors...has anybody else tried this before?
Why can't they just give me cold hard cash?

I'd first look through Walmarts documentation to see if you're supposed to use a special name when using the card... so far you've probably used your own and that may be the issue. For example, I tried an Entropay card recently, and it worked beautifully when using "ENTROPAY USER" as the cardholder name.

I've scanned, read, and re-read the FAQ on their website, looked all over their website and have found nothing on what to use for the cardholder name. Argh, this is SO frustrating!
I personally, strongly, suspect that they just do not accept them.
Probably a message to support would be in order... it will take them a day or two to get back to you, but I don't think there's much else we can do as the name is the only thing that you can actually enter in that form, aside from your card number :)
Okay, I sent a message to support. Hopefully this can be ironed out before the weekend deal is over (if not I'll just have to use a different card I guess). I was finally able to purchase something on Steam with the card, I guess because what I wanted was $49.99 and they wanted to take $1.00 for authorization purposes then it said I didn't have enough on the card. I bought the Medieval II Gold Pack for $30 and I'm downloading it now.

When you try to make the purchase with that Walmart card, do you get an overlay screen? The rest of the screen goes dark and there's a box in the middle? This box will normally show a window from your bank to authenticate the transaction.
If you don't, then I'd guess that the Walmart card won't allow 3D-Secure transactions. Our payment system won't allow us to process cards without this 3D-secure authentication. That's my guess on this problem.

Unfortunately I don't get this overlay screen. I tried this in both Firefox and Internet Explorer and it still didn't process it. I get this message:
We're sorry, but your payment attempt has been declined; this could have happened for two reasons:
1) some of the information entered in the form was incorrect; you can re-enter it 2 more times
2) the transaction has been automatically blocked by your bank and we recommend contacting them for assistance. Please note that some banks block all overseas transactions by default, until the customer authorizes them
Looks like the card doesn't like your site. Oh well...at least I can buy games off of Steam (or Amazon apparently).

From all this I gather that you cannot process overseas/international transactions with your card and we're based in europe.
So as the message says, please contact your bank for assistance, authorize transactions to GOG.com and then you'll be able to use the card on our site.
Its actually a moot point now since I spent most the card. Thanks for the help though!

I had the same issue with my Visa Gift Card (Visa-branded, not Walmart, but still with the Visa logo). I ended up just buying something on Steam, but I much rather would have bought Freespace 2. Any chance this will be fixed?
From what Oldski said, this is not something for GOG to fix, rather it is a problem with the terms of the card itself. The card issuer (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) would need to fix it by adjusting their policies regarding what the card is allowed and not allowed to do.

I believe we have recently (last two weeks?) resolved some issues/bugs with transactions and all should be well now but this may not be the problem for you.
I urge you to raise a support issue with order problem, this way we can help you directly (and not discuss your payment details on a public forum) and as a result, we may find a way to improve our payment process which will then help others in the longer term.
Sometimes the card issuer/bank declines the transaction and then you need to contact them to resolve the issue. We know it's a pain but sometimes this is the only way.
