Just a note on "boycotts" guys:
As an individual consumer, do not expect your choice to influence sales. You can attempt to rally others to your cause, but it is perfectly acceptable to refuse to buy a product for the sake of principle or ethics. The added benefit of this, of course, is that you will save money. Use that money for something special, or invest it.
In the market, we vote with our purchases, not our rants. Do not support that which you condemn.

Gundato: I use cover in FPSs all the time. It is called "Crouch behind the thing that bullets won't pass through" :p

Navagon: Perhaps ironically, I find crouching behind cover to be a hell of a lot more effective than the cover mechanics built into many games. Mostly they tend only to get me shot up more than I would have been if I was just crouching. The only exception was Mass Effect 2, in which the cover mechanics really did work for once.

Pretty much. "Taking cover" is only really useful for "blind fire", which means that you can fire pinpoint shots without being too vulnerable. Well, that and it usually includes a pan out to third-person view, which gives you a much wider field of view.

However, ranting is one way of rallying other to your cause. Perhaps it's not very effective, but it is a valid way.

Well, I was referring to the "boycott MW2" people who then purchased the game anyway, because they didn't want to miss out on the fun with their friends.

Yep, that's why I don't buy their stuff and know that it's a futile gesture in terms of what it does to their sales.
Still, in terms of what it does for me, it's very valuable. I get to say to myself, "I don't like what they do to their employees or how they approach the industry, so I'm not going to support it."
Sometimes it's not about bringing anyone down or leading an army to a cause. Sometimes it's just being willing to ignore a high profile game in favor of standing for something personally.
That means that I don't get to look forward to Starcraft II or Diablo III right now and I had to give up WoW if I wanted to pretend to have any principles about it--but I did it. It doesn't matter what anyone else does, it won't undermine my own determination.
You can actually do that somewhat in the half life games when it comes to turrets. You duck they activate the turret to blind fire. You can't see over the obstacle.
