Or maybe GOG got a deal on 2nd/3rd-tier Activision games that simply not profitable/popular enough to be priced more than $9.99? Can anybody think of an example?

AndrewC: Something tells me that it's going to be Activision/Blizzard.

Why are you dwelling on the worst case scenario here?

Nothing that wasn't on C64 or Amiga. Everything else is COD or disappointing (same difference to me)

Yeah we can at least hope for a reputable company. Maybe ThriXXX and we can get the jenna jameson game...

Oh it's big. Very big.
Have you just been playing the jenna jameson game?
Basically if its lucasarts I'll buy tie fighter and various adventures. If its ea I'll buy whatever awesome wing commander/crusader/syndicate goodies they release, if its atari I'll get the D&D games. Any other deal will be a wait and see job

haha, nice work!

cogadh: It still doesn't change the fact that Atari, like EA and Activision, has one of the longest histories and largest libraries in the gaming industry.

Harzzach: Arghlll, not again ... :)
The actual company "Atari" called itself "Infogrames" a few years ago. Atari was only a shell, a name, a brand, nothing more. In 2001 Infogrames bought this name and called itself Atari from then on. Infogrames was a big publisher in Europe, but comparing them to EA or Activisions history, even only the PC plattform, no, please :)

Infrogrames bought everything that was Atari (much more than just a shell), so for all intents and purposes, Atari became Infogrames, then Infogrames changed its name to Atari. It still doesn't change the fact that the current company called "Atari" owns everything that was the former company called "Atari", including its back catalog of games (at least the ones they haven't already sold off). That's what still puts it in the same league as Activision and EA, from a historical perspective.

Yea, anything named Guitar Hero.
Oh wait, you said something not popular instead of not good. That 2nd/3rd tier thing confuzzled me, sorry.
PS: There is the SOF series and Return to Castle Wolfenstein that could be priced at $5.99/$9.99.

Would that be a MMO or just a plain MM game?

One of the 3 biggest game publishers will add their games to the GOG catalogue early next year.

Interesting. So It HAS to be EA, Activision or Atari.

Not quite true. In fact, if you're after the old Atari, then Midway was the company to look for, as they ended up buying Atari's arcade division. Atari Games was renamed Midway Games West, and when they were shut down (years ago) there was virtually nothing left of the old Atari.
But this doesn't really matter. From a PC standpoint, it's Infogrames and Microprose that's interesting. Not the old Atari IPs.
And at any rate, I don't agree that Atari is more likely than any other big publisher. People are largely taking things for granted that they don't know. Activision has been making PC games since the early eighties, obviously there's tons of stuff there that they'd love to sell for $9.99 or even $5.99. Infocom, anyone? Same with EA. The only publisher we know has gone for a "nothing less than $9.99"-attitude is Ubisoft, and they _are_ here.

Something I know most of us are not entirely happy about. Ubisoft is one of the few really big publishers and they insist on a $9.99 price point for all their games even though some simply aren't worth the money. Yes I would rather have them here than not at all but they can afford to be more flexible with their pricing. Surely some of their games just don't sell at all at that price point.

No, if it's one of the three biggest publisher, it can't be Atari.

Well, some of their games _are_ worth the price, and we're happy to have them. :-)
