Is there any indication of what a subscription to Classic would cost, or does it require a subscription to the "normal" game?
In 2005 i tried WoW on a laptop while i was in South Korea... for about 3 hours. Lost interest real fast.
zug zug
i loved it when i was younger but ill prob give it a miss just dont have the time to play these types of games anymore :(

Crosmando: So, anyone here planning on returning to WoW next month for classic?
Tbh I like the trailers more than the game itself. The game seems too bland(fetch quests and other such quests galore) and/or needlessly difficult in some parts(quests that need huge parties to pull off) for me to get into for more than a month or so.

Now if it were like D3 for 360/etc and one could play most quests/storyline for one price at their leisure I might be more into it.

That and I wish Earth and Beyond came back.

CMOT70: Battlegrounds? The original Battleground experience was way different to the last time I played the game (which was 8 years ago admittedly). If they replicate the old Alterac Valley experience I'll give that a few tries at least. That's all it ever was for me, levelling and battlegrounds- never could care about raiding, I'm just not enough of a team player.

Crosmando: Ahhh yeah forgot PvP stuff, it's not for everyone.
The South Park episode was kino, though.

you'll never experience playing online multiplayer PC games circa 2004 again. I hope WoW Classic is fun and that people enjoy it, but what made Vanilla WoW compelling to groups of internet strangers back 15 years ago is gone.

what I'm expecting, and who knows if I'm right or not, is that once the mass of casuals get filtered out after that first month, you'll be left with regular MMO players who just want a retro experience, and the 100% pure salt players who have never actually stopped playing Vanilla trying to push Bliz into escalated patching, until it doesn't even resemble what WoW Classic looked like in August 27, 2019. I hope it does find a foothold one day, because I feel an official retro server has a lot of potential, but that seed of potential going to morph and evolve and change rapidly once people start monkeying with it. into what? I don't know

It requires a regular subscription and unlocks both retail and vanilla WoW.

Thought so. Was hoping I could get away with slightly cheaper.
I'll definetely be giving it a shot, current WoW is like a completely different game. Everything revolves around dailies and weeklies and artificial carrots. Classic still had that freedom where you could do whatever the heck you wanted and still have fun. It's just not going to happen in the modern version because everyone that plays seems to be playing just to do dailies or to reach an arbitrary goal. I doubt it'll capture the same thing it once did but the absence of all those automated matchmaking systems should make servers feel more like communities again. That is one aspect that I think really hurt MMO's in general the most. You come across so many strangers you'll never see again, something that was different back when you didn't have so much cross-server stuff going on.

Failure to fix dead or unbalanced servers due to all the money they were conning people out with their server transfer, pay to win scheme was a strong reason for bringing in cross realm, random group finders.

Pangaea666: You should try out Path of Exile from Grinding Gear Games then.

(Please don't -- for your own sanity)

idbeholdME: Oh I did. Just finished the campaign and bailed out though :P
I did as well, and played more than I should have. But the way they've been developing the game lately, it became less and less fun, so I ditched it a few leagues ago. Wise decision.
I've been hearing there was problems with them testing out servers.
Something to do with the phasing of players where they are disappearing from each other.

Theoretically I was planning to.

I really loved TBC (I started playing with 2.3) and I was sad I missed out Vanilla entirely.

But… leveling was low, very low. And farming was MASSIVE. In TBC I've spent a whole month roaming the same lake to farm Motes of Water, just to craft a single piece of armour.

I… kind of like the idea, in theory. In practice… I'm not really sure if I'm up for it.

In WoW I'm very PvE oriented, Raid oriented actually, I only care about the raids, and nothing else. And the idea of taking 6 months just to cap the level, and then farm the equipment… well… I don't really think I have enough time for that.

I might give it a try, but I'm not terribly optimistic about the results.

Though I started in vanilla, I think Classic would be a very bittersweet experience for me. Yes, it would be neat to once again play a WoW that isn't focused on the endgame, that isn't insultingly easy before you start doing endgame group PVE, that doesn't just hand you everything you need and that actually expects you to go out into the world to get stuff done instead of having automated matchmaking and portals everywhere... but the graphical downgrade, severe content restriction and wonky early balance would be a bitter pill to swallow.

I'm nostalgic for the overall design philosophy of the time, in which world interaction and the leveling experience were central, but I can't say I'd want to be limited to plain old vanilla content. I want to support this kind of MMO, but on the other hand... I still feel like GOG is more deserving of my very limited money than Activision is.

I think you nailed the main reason for WoW's decline. In the early days the realm I played in, all the regulars knew each other that were into the same things. I was into PvP stuff back then and even the Horde and Alliance knew each other well and had a code of conduct. After big Alterac battles we'd often log onto our level 1 alts and discuss the battle we just had. Then when realms started merging all that was lost. Everyone suddenly just dropped to the lowest common denominator with regards to behaviour. There was no respect and the fun was lost.

Also for PvE, even solo levelling you could actually get yourself into trouble and die back in the early days. There was some challenge, the wasn't always a graveyard right near you and getting the things you wanted took time and effort. I know the new Classic version won't hold up in long run, but I'm going to give it a month anyway- probably not day one though, I'll let them sort out the bugs for a month first.
