I'll chime in and say that I did try Wolfendoom a couple of months ago.

I would play Wolf 3D first before doing Wolfendoom. The design of Wolfendoom is definitely great though, and well worth it. The remastered soundtrack is a joy to listen to IF you have experience with the original version because it references it so much.

Edit: I am not referring to Blade of Agony (though that one is great as well), I am referring to Brutal Wolfenstein 3D.

MartyD82: I'm thinking, a little later, I'll buy the Wolfenstein 3D/Spear Of Destiny pack here on GOG, run it through ECWolf, and then mod it with CeeJay's enhancement pack to beef up the graphics a bit without losing the vanilla game's spirit.
I don't like graphics mods that change the look, but I do highly recommend ECWolf. The map being added makes the game ten times more playable.

MartyD82: I know Doom 2 has the Wolfendoom mod, which is supposedly a Total Conversion of Wolf 3D. But how is it compared to Wolf 3D?
The thing is - the main difference between Wolfenstein and Doom games is that in Doom you can go up and down. If there is a "ladder" of floor tiles leading up or down, that is. If Wolfendoom has the same levels as Wolfenstien (where floor is even) than there should be literally no difference gameplaywise.

This. One of the biggest problems with the original Wolfenstein was it's maze level design. The shareware episode, the one most people played, isn't that bad. But the next ones.... oh my god.

That combined with no floor and ceiling textures made it very frustating.
Definitely play the original in ECWolf. The boss rotations mod is a nice addition that is true to the original. I still assume that id would have included the rotations if it weren't fore space and time constraints.

Like StingingVelvet, I recommend using the map. I remember hacking a rudimentary map into Wolf4SDL before ECWolf was a thing.
