adaliabooks: Alpha Centauri is definitely one of the best but I find the setting lacks the charm of the classic Civs.

Vythonaut: Personally, I believe AC's setting is one of the best settings in a video game. While it's true that in many games we can travel in other planets inside our solar system, other planetary systems inside our galaxy, even distant galaxies, Proxima b is the most realistic approach in real life since it is "only" ~4 light years from planet Earth. I can't stop wondering "What if...?" and this game offers a great visualisation/aspect of what we could meet there, through a great story. No need to mention the magnificent way the game is presented through the use of sophisticated and greatly explained science fiction (the datalinks).

And here's a nice article about the real life journey to Proxima b: http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=35402
There's nothing particularly wrong with the setting, I just find the historical to modern era setting of normal Civ games more appealing.
In normal Civ it's pretty easy to tell what everything is and guess what it might do, in AC it's that much harder to figure out because nothing is familiar (until you've played for a while anyway).
I have a lot of love for Civ. 2. I liked the building improvements and the pacing system. I was really glad that they reworked the settler/ worker system though and added in more options like religion in later titles, but after playing Civ. 6 I feel the series lost a lot of it's way and the era's go too quickly although I do like in Civ. 6 the government selection system that is in place.
I have the best memories for 2, but that is where I started.

I have a friend who plays nothing but 4, and I mean literally that.

I always liked the wonder movies from 2, they were the best.

Perhaps I am getting old, but I think the franchise will not getter any better. Silliness such as removal of religion etc (I know they had to do it) makes me think this game would be best placed in trying to stop a franchise renewal and get a bit more niche perhaps to a new Alpha Centuari. Maybe we will say the same when there is a colony on mars.
Ok, who's cheating with Alpha Centauri? XD
Even if good, it cannot be the absolute favourite Civ game of all the series! O_o

Played 3,4 and 5. My favourite one is 4 by far.
Alpha Centauri is the only one of them that I still go back to, and is my absolute favorite. Awesome game.

Nah, AC has a huge following. It's a great game, still a lot more complex then most of the newer entries.

I would love to play Civ 2 again as I have fond memories of it, probably one of my earliest PC games...

Yes, the names you see in here aren't them. :-P
BUMP
Not using the poll, but:
4 > 2 (TOT) > SMAC > 3 > 1 > Colonization

There are no 5/6/Beyond, since they aren't yet available to be owned.

Why not? :(
Having played them all, nothing held my interest like Colonization. Maybe Civ 1, but that aged quick.
I've found the spinoffs (Alpha, Colonization, Beyond Earth ) more intresting than the main games.
Typically my favourite "proper" Civlizations game has always been the latest one, but I haven't played VI ... so V then.

Post-edit: voted for Alpha Centauri, it's just one of the best games I've ever played, period. The other Civ games I've played have all been fun, but this one fulfills so many of my sci-fi fantasies.
