When gaming, should i close my Chrome tabs to improve performance, or is it okay if they stay open?

Right now i have 18 tabs open and it's using 1,5 GB Ram, while my GTA V tab is only using 1 GB more

Should i close Chrome

It depends on several variables. Such as your page file size, total ram size. If you have windows 10 you can open Xbox gamebar using WIN+g keys to monitor resources. If you have nvidia GeForce experience, that also has an overlay to monitor. Otherwise open task manager, minimise, play game for 10 mins and just alt+tab back to task manager and see the ram

I am low rating your post because you are incapable of independent thought.
Until I stay under 100% RAM occupation I'm good.

You don't have to be tech savvy to use task manager.
Anyway... you asked about "performance", and RAM usage is irrelevant in that regard - as long as you have enough of it.

Me, I have 32GB of RAM, so I'll never have to close any application to play a game. Programs that use GPU/CPU might need closing; but it depends on the game - for older games, it usually doesn't matter.

Tech savvy enough to boast 16GB RAM.

Not tech savvy enough to flip a coin and see which outcome answers your own question.
if you were on a low end system id say yes. the fact you know you have 16gb ram and can run GTA 5 says otherwise.

perhaps in future you could simply consider those kinds of factors?

Why would a coin flip help

you proposed only two options - close chrome, or not close chrome.

neither would exactly put you into a dark spiral of not being able to use your computer or game again.
therefore there are only two outcomes - like the flip of a coin.

in other words, your thread has no purpose as you could have just as easily flipped a coin and gone with the result.

Makes sense but it was a weird analogy. British people do tend to use weird analogies. Thank you

Sorry did not see you are british as well
