Dev Diary 1 | Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

"Today we offer the chance for a sneak peek into the development of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader!
Delve into the grim darkness of the far future with Olga Kellner, our lead narrative designer, in this first ever dev diary for the upcoming game."
Looks like a new Pathfinder game. But more cartoon-ish.
So many bad WH40k games, so few good ones. Since this one is made by Owlcat Games, I'm optimistic that it will fall into the latter group.

Good and bad are very subjective things, but judging by Kingmaker and things I heard about WotR I would expect more of a mixed bag rather than genuinely good one.
The problem with a 40k CRPG is that the lore doesn't really allow for diverse parties. An imperial human for example is never going to work with any alien. About the only species that would actually collaborate with other species (ie not shooting them in the head) are the Tau and to a lesser extent Eldar.

Rogue traders are exception to this I believe, and Imperium does know to use Da Orkz as mercenaries from time to time.

From what I understand, the Imperial position on Xenos is to exterminate them, no exceptions.

To think Games Workshop used to be very selective in who they were allowing to use their games' licenses. Nowadays they just hand them to any random passersby who asks or so it seems. Not surprisingly, the end result is very mixed. A very few great ones, some good, and a lot of skippable ones.

Imperial position and actual practices of realpolitik are two different thing. Big Bobby G's Eldar girlfriend speaks for itself.
lately Games Workshop brand games have been utter trash cash ins.
Floaty generic first person shooters with guns that don't pack an oomph even.
Like uncooked toast levels of plain with getting the basic fundamentals wrong sort of trash.

Actually, it isn't. The Empire sometimes even welcomes minor Xenos factions. Let me check if I find something on topic...

"How to: Imperial Creed
October 03, 2022

While he walked among His people, the Emperor denied His own divinity, yet His final, eternal sacrifice and interment upon the Golden Throne served to prove His godhood to the bereaved masses. Eventually, the Emperor came to be worshipped by a staggering array of different groups, often possessed of highly divergent ideas regarding His life, death, and continued existence. It must be noted that seeds of this religion were sown by those who are now viewed as heretics of the highest order by the Imperium - the ultimate irony of the Imperial Creed.
It was perhaps inevitable that conflict should ensue between the divergent sects, but within a thousand years of the Emperor’s ascension, one had risen above them all. The Ecclesiarchy achieved dominance by a process of absorbing other groups, adapting doctrines, and forging links in order to make it appear they had been there all along - though the roots of their beliefs still go back to the time when even a mention of the Emperor’s divinity was prosecuted in a brutal fashion.

In the 41st Millennium, the Ecclesiarchy (known officially as the Adeptus Ministorum) holds sway over the hearts of all but a few of the Emperor’s subjects. It is a galaxy-spanning order based on Terra that holds a strong grip on the minds of the whole of Humanity - something the architects of the Imperial Creed could only have dreamed of before being cast out into the shadows.

Yet despite its deep-set roots and overbearing presence in the Imperium, the Adeptus Ministorum must constantly assert itself against those who would threaten or challenge its sanctity. Uprisings of the faithless are a constant scourge, as are traitor and xenos incursions onto shrine worlds. And when such hostilities pose a significant threat, the Ministorum deploys the Adepta Sororitas to eradicate the enemies of the faith. Without hesitation or mercy, they administer the wrath of the Ecclesiarchy to the enemies of Mankind, and by their deeds are malefic cabals of psykers, heretics, and mutants scoured from existence.

The Adepta Sororitas track their lineage back to the small cult known as the Daughters of the Emperor, members of which were entirely devoted to worship of the Emperor and maintaining inner purity. They studied the ancient arts of war, clearing their minds of worldly considerations in order to hone their battle skills over the course of a lifetime. They are both an obdurate military force and a beacon of faith, and with unflinching might, they crush all who oppose the will of the Ecclesiarchy or the sanctity of the Emperor’s domain. Where the Daughters of the Emperor formed but a single sect, the Adepta Sororitas comprise multiple Orders scattered across the galaxy, allowing them to combat threats to the faith wherever they arise.

The most widely known Orders of the Adepta Sororitas are the Orders Militant, also known as the Sisters of Battle. The warriors amongst their ranks dedicate themselves to achieving purity of spirit through martial perfection and follow the most stringent training regimes and doctrines. The number of Sisters who compose the Orders Militant pales in comparison to the sheer scale of soldiery wielded by the Astra Militarum, but the Adepta Sororitas boasts a degree of elite martial prowess that is almost unmatched amongst the Imperial Guard.

Alongside the Orders Militant are manifold non-militant Orders. Their duties include the provision of medical care both on and off the battlefield, interpretation of holy texts and cryptic xenos communiqués, as well as instructing the Imperium’s ruling elite in the correct implementation and practice of the Imperial Creed.

All in all, Sororitas, be they from Militant Orders or not, play a significant role in the life of the Imperium. We can not wait to introduce you to the one present in the Rogue Trader.

P.S. Not only will you meet her soon, but the servants of the Ruinous Powers are also waiting for their turn to burst into reality. Warriors of ancient age, coming to take what is theirs by birthright."

"Sister Argenta: The Soul Ablaze
October 18, 2022

The terrible tread of gigantic Titans, the scream of drop pods entering the atmosphere – these are the sounds that make the hearts of heretics tremble. So too does prayer – the holy battle prayer of the Adepta Sororitas. Also known as the Sisters of Battle, these fierce and devoted women make up the militant arm of the Ecclesiarchy, the state church of the Imperium of Man.

The orphaned daughter of Imperial Guard officers, the child that would become Sister Argenta received harsh training in the Schola Progenium – the crucible of the Imperial military elite. Only one memory survived from before the ordeal of training – or was it merely a dream? In this vision, the girl saw grey ship hulls and dirty military camps, dank trenches, faceless people in Astra Militarum uniforms, the roar of a counterattack, the crescendo of her mother's heart-rending cry, broken by an ominous silence... and the golden Aquila lying among the ashes, so immaculate, so alien in this gloomy and bleak environment. The symbol of the God-Emperor of Mankind.

Somewhere in the malicious oceans of the warp, the Emperor was fighting the ruinous powers of Chaos. For the young orphan, He became a semantic constant, an object of worship, an impeccable role model, the reason she had survived hell. Guided by this shining symbol, sure that she had been chosen for some great, as yet unknown, purpose, the girl proved herself time and time again in the Schola and ascended to the ranks of the Adepta Sororitas. Her birth name was forgotten, replaced by a new one – Argenta, the name of a local saint worshipped in the Calixis Sector and the Koronus Expanse. A long and crooked path then led her to Footfall, where she was to join a small mission of her order to guard a holy reliquary.

It seems that Argenta lives and breathes for one purpose – to achieve perfection worthy of the Emperor's most faithful warriors. She is unstoppable, audacious – sometimes too audacious. The battlefield is her temple, and bolter rounds are the words of her fervent prayer. When she rushes into battle, the ship's bulkheads reverberate with the passion of her prayers, and her allies feel the surge of power.

But what led the young sister away from her duties as a guardian of the reliquary? Was it a holy epiphany or a fall from grace? This remains a tightly held secret…"
