I'm trying to launch it on my PC but even with compatibility mode, dgvoodoo or dxwnd - it's not working. I'm choosing display option (software or direct3D (or dgvoodoo wrapper), in all cases after that I'm receiving only generic windows error " program wargames stopped working", which doesn't tell me too much. I have no idea how to solve it, any help would be appreciated (if possible, would like to have some other solution than virtual machine).

Are you using the patch from Patches-Scrolls?

Just tried, but sadly, there is still the same issue (tried on different display options, but without any luck).
I remember this game on PS1, it wasn't an RTS but you could switch between controlling vehicles by pressing L2 or something, it also had buildings/terrain which turned transparent when you went behind them (like Syndicate Wars). Weird how you remember these things...

There is this Windows 10 patch, with detailed instructions on the fix, you can give it a try and see if it works for you, or try some of those options yourself:

Edit: I think you may need to use the original executable for this one, not the patches-scrolls one.

Wow, it worked! I needed to modify one value in config file, but other than that - it's working without issues!

Many thanks for help!
Glad it worked! :)

That's interesting, while I was aware that PS version was released in the same year, I didn't know (earlier) that it was different type of game. Even checked out of curiosity on mobygames - turns out that it even had slightly different title (WarGames: Defcon 1).

Kinda wished though that we could have some more info in intro, because I've got no idea where all those WOPR and NORAD forces came from and why first one is using robots and droids etc (didn't watch the movie).

It's a bit interesting case though, making in 1998 game based on 1983 movie (and RTS game, while most of those "movie-based" games are rather action-type).

There was a bit similar story with Dune 2000, while both PC and PS1 version were RTS games, the one for PS1 was on vastly different, 3D engine (slightly similar to this used in Emperor: Battle for Dune)
Enjoyed the PS version. Bought the pc version hoping it was the same but it wasn't. I really loved that menu music on the PS version.

That music....
