Not bad, was expecting some cool Metzen artwork though.

Alaric.us: That was how RTS games were at that point. I think Starcraft became the first truly asymmetrical game, and that is one of the reasons for its immense popularity. Before that, the differences between factions were always either cosmetic or otherwise very minor (Dune 2, Warcraft 1 & 2, etc.)
avatar
CARRiON-XCII: GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod would beg to differ.
I always felt that C&C factions weren't all that different. No more so than the factions of Dune 2.

Naturally, they were not exact reflections of each other, but overall it was pretty much the same thing. NOD/Atreides cost a bit less and made a bit more units that were a bit weaker. GDI/Harkonnen were a bit more expensive and made a bit fewer units that were a bit stronger. In the end you still made a bunch of little cars and sent them at the enemy. It wasn't entirely different play styles like, say, Zerg and Protoss.

MightyPinecone: But there were several less than ideal things about WCII if memory serves, such as the nine unit max size that could be selected at once. I guess most of it comes down to the age of the game. I've long wanted Blizzard to make a new Warcraft RTS.
avatar
F4LL0UT: Never really cared about the nine unit limit, I evened it out using numbered groups. My main problem were the almost perfectly symmetrical factions. I'll never quite understand why they (and most other RTS developers, for that matter) did that, especially despite already going the extra mile of drawing unique unit sprites for each faction.
I would guess that the primary reason was that it was easy to achieve balance between the factions if they are basically the same.
Ah, memories. Memories of extracting map tiles from the game and building maps in HTML, using grass or sea as a tiled background image and a massive table with a cell for each tile that's different from said background.

Falci:
'Great' doesn't do justice to the art of this game.
It still looks good after all these years. Blizz knows how to hire legendary artists.
Besides the buildings, units, etc, the icons were... just take a look, below:

The flawless OST also helped the game, of course.

Alaric.us: Hey, so I long wanted to make a Warcraft 2 wallpaper for my desktop and today finally went through the trouble of finding my CD, finding an external drive, and getting the map editor to run.

In case someone loves that game as much as I do, here's the wallpaper itself. Enjoy!

Nice job.

That southern barracks hurts my eyes though. Clear path between townhall and goldmine was key.

Thank you! And you are absolutely right! I was going for pretty as opposed to efficient, though. Normally, when playing, I build everything as if on a grid. It works great, but is kinda ugly. =)

Actually other than the barrack, it's pretty good, efficiency wise.

This brings back some memories. God, I used to love this game. Blizzard were my childhood heroes.

(even if I prefer orcs' music :P)
Warcraft 2 is hipster. Warcraft 1 was the thing! Yes, my lord.

Hope you didn't miss the "Lost Vikings" and "Blackthorne" from them. :) If you did, its freeware now - but better find the original DOS version.

I still have the Warcraft 2 soundtrack playing it my car. Not exclusively, of course, but it's on my main USB stick, in the games section. =)
Nice :)

This reminds me that a person from Slovakia is developing an RTS game, which is inspired by Warcraft. It's called Loria. Here's the official page.

Balancing ironically being the thing they f'd up anyway in the minor differences they did let through.
